Rays manager Joe Maddon came out in midgame to complain to plate umpire Tom Hallion about a spot on Blanton’s cap.

Blanton pleaded not guilty.

They rub the balls up with whatever they rub them up with, and you rub it up and get it on your hand,” he said. “It’s nothing sticky. Anybody can go touch it. It’s just basically just dirt from the ball.”

I heard about this stuff a few years ago. He's telling the truth. What's on his hat is accumulated baseball rubbing mud. If you've never heard of it, follow that link or this one.

told my brother the same thing last week about Tampa. They celebrated their victory over the Red Sox like they had already won it all!

Let's win tonight!!!!!! Make this a night, we as Phillies fans, will never forget!

Totally splutted after saturday night/sunday morning boozing (I'm no albery finney). Weighed up the odds of further exhaustion and major wizlette disapproval if I staggered into work drunk this morning, and figured it was better to give game 4 a miss so that I would be all fresh for game 5.

Only complication is that wizlette's sister is staying with us, so I'll be watching the game in the kitchen. Thank fuck I laid network cable in the gaff when wizlette was pregnant. no way the laptop would cope with the feed over the lousy kitchen wireless reception.

Blanton's thunderous fifth-inning hack was about as short and sweet as an 18-wheeler. Rays reliever Edwin Jackson fed him a 93-mph flameball. And Blanton rocked the house with a massive shot over the flower pots in left-center, as his ballpark shook and his many admirers in uniform almost keeled over.

Uh, wait. Cancel that "almost."

"I fell off my chair in the bullpen," reliever Clay Condrey said. "I mean it. I fell right off my chair."

I think I know what makes stark worth reading--he's not a great writer, he's not especially knowledgeable, but he writes about baseball, not himself. And even after all these years, he seems to still be a fan of the game.

i don't completely agree that he's not a great writer. i think he's got a lot of old, played-out tricks that he resorts to when he writes, but i think he's really good at using those old, played-out tricks.

he also knows who the quote machine in every clubhouse is. it was Doug Glanville for a really long time, but i guess now it's Condrey.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

You know what was a cool shot - I don't know if anyone got it though:

Saturday's game - there was an angle from high above home plate of the American Flag in the outfield, and the Phils and Rays standing on the baselines. The blue and white of the Rays and the red and white of the Phillies almost made it look staged it balanced so well off the flag, green of the grass, and.. uh, the brown of the dirt? Anyway, it would make an awesome portrait, particularly if the angle included the big Phillies sign from the plas-mo-tron (although I'm not sure the angle had it) and the WS logo on the field.

if there was, i haven't seen it or anyone watching it either day

there is a big screen over at the stage near the 1B gate

i don't know if they show the game on that big screen or its just there for the pregame stuff

* Did anyone DVR/TiVo the game last night? Someone said they saw my wife and me cheering after Ryan Howard's first home run.

* Took a picture of my wife posing with the Steve Carlton statue with her cap that says "PHILLIES" in Hebrew, for ironic lulz.

you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?
