I headed for shelter, but only by going up higher under the overhang.

Speaking of blue seats, it didn't seem like it was really a capacity crowd today. They claimed a sellout, but there were plenty of blue seats visible throughout the game and Ashburn Alley wasn't even crowded to make up for it.

I imagine the primary focus will be the Phils, except what if the Phils start at 3 or so, and the Eagles game or Giants game has an interesting ending? Also working against the Phils is my roommate is about 20x more of an Eagles fan than a Phillies fan. Although as they are our common ground, perhaps that will make the compromise more likely.

Whatever. Sweep them. Or play a night game for game four.

Four would be fine.

The Pack play at 1 also. I'm not sure MLB would want to go up against Green Bay and the Eagles. The Bears play at 1. The Bucs don't play till 4. Both games will be in central time zone, so that doesn't make a difference.

In the main room. I have one in my bedroom as well, so there's always that. But Sundays should be a shared experience of beer, me making fun of my roommate in his LJ Smith jersey, and the Phillies winning after football is over.

So, not only is Cole Hamels not wearing long sleeves, but after he reached base on a sacrifice bunt and an error by Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks, he refused the offer to wear a jacket on the bases. Pitchers usually wear the jacket to keep their arm warm. Hamels didn't see the need for it, and when he waved off the batboy with jacket in hand, I think he probably provided fodder for the folks at one of my all-time favorite Web sites, colehamelsfacts.com.

That's actually a game that has interest. I'm rooting for many players of both squads to be carted of the field in pain.

Mitch Williams threw out a first pitch before the game and chucked it about 20 feet over the head of catcher Lou Marson and the Phillie Phanatic, who played umpire.
Obviously, it was planned.

"I had to warn the cops behind the plate, because I didn't want to hit anybody," Williams said.

"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "

Is Brad Lidge still as invincible as he looked for most of the season?

I'm not a scout either, but his slider looked pretty good to me, and they certainly weren't hitting him hard today, and his ERA indicates they haven't been doing very much of that other times as well.

What could be happening is that hitters, after a season of waving at his slider, have realized A. they can't hit it and B. it rarely ends up as a strike. So they're just letting it go. Of course, this depends on them actually looking for it and recognizing it, which probably means just that they've recognized some patterns of him using it better than they had previously. His fastball still seems effective and there may just be a need for him to mix his pitches in new ways.

He's certainly had a fair amount of luck to go with his huge amount of skill this season, and eventually that can turn the other way. So I'm always prepared for the worst, but I don't think he's suddenly become ineffective. I think sliders look like they "snap" a lot more when hitters are futilely swinging over them, and less when they are called ball 3.

Wait, is this true? Mitch Williams threw out the first pitch of a playoff game? Mitch is a good guy and I'm glad he's still around, but he shouldn't be throwing out the first pitch. We're tempting the playoff karma gods here.

I'm pretty sure that if both NLDS series go to 4 games, then on Sunday, they'll put one of the games on TNT and have only 3 on TBS. I'd guess something like this:

1:30 Phils-Brewers
2:30 Rays-ChiSox (TNT)
5:00 BoSox-Angels
8:30 Cubs-Dodgers

(Lidge's slider looked, to me, completely different than his slider from the first half of the season.)

yeah, they could do that. the tenative schedule says

11) Sun October 5th *# 4 12:00pm or TBA ALA # 3
12) Sun October 5th *# 4 3:30pm or TBA ALB # 3
*13) Sun October 5th # 3 7:00pm or TBA NLA *# 4
*14) Sun October 5th # 3 10:30pm or TBA NLB *# 4

i really don't think they want them overlapping. i don't know. we'll see.

to be fair, it seemed as though whenever he did throw a slider straight into the dirt, it was at the call of Carlos Ruiz. he called for a bunch of sliders followed by a glove tapping the dirt, one of which resulted in the ball getting away from Cooch and allowing the runners to move up. i can't blame Ruiz directly for the failure of these pitches, but it seemed as though he was being very formulaic with the location of his sliders.

Smoltz made a comment, a couple pitches before Lidge struck out Fielder, that if he had lowered his slider "a hair" he would have gotten him. Instead, on the pitch in question, Fielder wasted it for a foul ball. He ended up getting him anyway, but it seemed like Ruiz was thinking along the same lines and just extended that sentiment a mite too far.

Technically he threw out the second ceremonial "first" pitch. Injured Officer Bowes threw out the first. After Mitch did his part, he took off his jersey and gave it to the officer, who looked very happy and put the jersey on.
