BENDER.

I think it was sincere, but still pretty funny how much they didn't want to believe.

I remember it being the same way when Angelo talked to Bill James a while back. "You're telling me Bobby Abreu didn't sanction the Holocaust?"

I liked when he said there's never been someone known for his passing go number 1. Apparently he's never heard of Magic Johnson.

He'd be your 4th big man in that scenario - willing to draft a guy number 3 to be your second big man off the bench?

I agree with this logic as well. Can't draft Bender #3 unless you are also going to trade Noel. And I like Noel. So no thanks.

Get the #3 from the Celtics, and then let the next 3-4 teams battle it out for trading up to get Bender. Take the best player left among Dunn, Murray, Hield (in that order) and grab an extra asset.

Circling back to this, I would draft Bender to be the starting center of the future.

Seems like Okafor is getting traded. Just working off the chatter to follow this logic.

As I said, I don't think Noel sticks around. I think he wants to be a starting center (why wouldn't he?). But is he a starting 5 on a championship team? He doesn't really fit at the 4. Not sure how great his stone hands and limited offensive game fit next to Simmons. In anycase, when his contract is up, he will probably have more opportunity with another team.

Saric is Simmons backup, maybe spends little time at the 3.

That leaves Embiid. I want to believe as much as anyone in his greatness, but I'm just not sure that's really deserved at this point. He's going to be on a minutes restriction this year, and I'm starting to talk myself out of his ability to be a 80 games, 30+ minutes player. My whole desire to draft Bender hinges on Embiid's "reality" let's say. I guess I just think that until I see it, it's irresponsible to believe it.

So, I don't think it's crazy to draft Bender. There's an argument against it, but I don't think that argument is "well, we already have guys". He's not just a elite talent as are the guys we have in certain areas of their games, he's a more complete talent, and is possibly an elite fit in multiple ways with multiple guys.

Plus, Dunn, Murray, Hield et.al. don't seem like starting caliber players to me. So, you're still using #3 on a bench player if you go one of those routes.

Just sayin' is all.

That was a well-reasoned take and I agree with your points so on jah, noel, embiid...etc. I just think bender is years away and his warts are not as well known as the others in the top 10 (and the young players in the league). Much to learn about him.

great post gr, and I think Bender will be a viable player in this league, but I'm not sure a multi-year project just to get them up to NBA-caliber on offense or rebounding is somebody we will pick. From the vids I've seen I REALLY like his athleticism, his switching and how quick he is on defense, but we already have a lot invested in other areas. I think he's a long-term possible stud in this league, though.

i would love Bender on my rebuilding franchise but I think we are too deep in the hole at PF/C for them to go there.

and davis doesn't really steal the ball. Noel's hands are incredibly quick for a big man. i guess Skal is also somewhat similar with rim protection but do we trust a guy that barely played and is super skinny to replace Noel? it's like you take the few negatives of Noel and put them up front and center with Skal and take away the proven nature of the NBA games Noel has banked.

Picture Noel starting on the Warriors with their 1, 2, 3 and 4. He'd easily win a championship with them, I think, and be an important contributor.

Noel and Okafor can both be the 4th or 5th best player on a championship team. The problem is you are looking for guys now who will be 1-2-3 on a team. Simmons should be one of those guys, so if you can move either guy in hopes to try to get at 1-2-3 you probably do it.

have heard a lot of discussion about getting into the top 10 (top 6?) to get a guard.
have also heard that next year's draft is going to be pretty stocked too.
have also heard a wide range of what it would take to get back up there, and what to give up to get there.

the sixers obvious assets are okafor and noel. not sure what value saric has with his ???, and common thought i hear is that the 24 and 26 aren't worth all that much.

the other clear assets are future picks, but there's reservation of sending away at the very least 2017 picks - both the sixers and the lakers (plus the sacramento swap option i think?) - with both teams most likely a bit improved but still probably in the lottery.

my thought on this is - if they need to throw in another piece to a trade, what about one of these protected picks you see all the time? not sure what it'd mean or what it'd take, but making sure they still have a high pick for at least a year or so? so maybe lotto protect for 2017 and top 5 for 2018 - would a> the sixers do this and b> another team do this?

just thinking out loud.
Not everything I think is something I should say.

I think I'm ready to say that the best Noel could be is the 4th, maybe 3rd best player on a championship team. But I'm not ready to limit Okafor that much. He's so good offensively, that if he's on a team with good perimeter defenders (who don't allow drives to the basket as easily as the Sixers did last year), and he improves as much or more than other players his age have previously, he could easily be a top-2 player on a championship team.

He's going to learn how to shoot corner threes reliably IMHO. And he's going to be in better physical shape every year, which will help him on both offense and defense. As I've written before, I don't want to face him on the Celtics or Knicks. Don't trade him yet.

Noel's skills (shot blocking, overall defensive impact, and steals) are skills you see in bigs who swing playoff games and his deficiencies don't kill him.

Okafor's warts take more off the table than what his skills bring to it. I'm sure he'll improve, but it is what it is right now.

Also, regarding trading a protected pick, the weakness there is that it limits you in the future since you owe a pick, but you don't know what year you owe it yet. Like if the Lakers had tried to trade a pick last year, it would have had to convey two years after ours so they'd likely have to weaken the protection on the next pick each year. It's conceivable that they'd end up giving us a top five pick next year and then lose another high pick two years later. Or look at the Kings who had to send us a pick that's going to be unprotected in 2019 because of their trade with the Bulls. I'm counting on us not being terrible year over year, but you still are putting yourself in a shaky position later on if you have outstanding picks years away.
