agreed on all accounts.jamiethekiller wrote:should have said it before, but i'm in favor of the tax. But nothing binds the tax to child care, the tax isn't actually on sugar, and the way the tax is collected is a disaster.

“Let's make clear that you're still going to have an Office of Complaint Review. In other words, it’s not like we’re taking away everything,” Conway told “Good Morning America” anchor George Stephanopoulos. “Look, there's a very ambitious agenda to push forward. The Republicans have been given the majority in the House and the Senate, most of the governorships, they've won over 1,000 state legislative seats under President Obama's watch. So there's a mandate there for them to make significant change.”
Conway admitted that the proposal, which still must be approved by Congress with a vote on Tuesday, amounted to gutting the office but told Stephanopoulos that “gutting it doesn't mean there won't be a mechanism.” She said that the move by House Republicans was not inconsistent with Trump’s campaign pledge to “drain the swamp” because it leaves in place some means of policing Congressional ethics while cutting down on the “overzealousness in some of the processes over the years.”

the big problem before 08 was that the house committee just never would act because they were afraid of vindication and looking partisan.

public office is a tad different compared with someone accusing a private person of a crime. we allow anonymous allegations and tips in all sorts of places, why not here where they have tons of power at their discretion and can easily malign or discredit the accuser?

a sales tax is levied on an end consumer; it may be bullshit but it's the American way.
it'll take a few tweaks and have some kinks to rollout but in the end the tax will start to work as planned (i.e cutting soda/sugary drink intake). the rest is political cover, but it was necessary considering it's the only major municipality that was able to pass it and they're the only one that did it by levying at the distributor level. i can still buy the drinks my family likes but it'll just cost a bit more. and we'll figure out which drinks for my family got missed.

With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it

Almost every government watchdog/IG office has the ability to review anonymous complaints. They've basically eliminated the possibility of a House staffer ever filing a complaint because they're not going to risk losing their job.

no offense, i don't want my sugar drink tax framed as socialized health tax. i don't want to bear the burden of someone poor choices to drink something that's unhealthy. a price increase across the board for ALL items because of a poorly implemented tax.

People who think it’s obviously absurd to believe that a black Muslim from Minneapolis can help Democrats win white working class votes in the Midwest would probably be fascinated to hear about what a black guy from Chicago named Barack Hussein Obama managed to pull off.

i mean he did say, as unfair as they may be. he'd probably have no problem with this if it happened in 6 months. this makes him look good while not even fundamentally disagreeing with what's happening. smart tweets imo.Youseff wrote:slugsrbad wrote:Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 59m59 minutes ago
