I'm sad that nearly 60 million people thought that Trump was the best option. I'm pissed at the democrats for not trying to find a viable alternate to Hillary over the past 8 years. Democratic leadership should be purged from their positions and let the party try to reset. Losing the senate and the house is going to hurt over the next few years and losing the Supreme Court could be devastating. I blame DWS more than any other one person for last night's outcome.

Also, Hillary's campaign was all about Trump and how awful he is. I saw a lot of her commercials and he dominated all of them. Simply presenting your opponent as a giant douche doesn't seem like an effective way to get people excited about voting for you even if it works to deter people from voting for the other guy.

This is an interesting take, especially given the preliminary exit polling data of a 48-42 national margin for Trump in the 18-29 demo.

The NRAs whole message is that gun control is bad. Getting people to go against something is easier than getting people to go for something.

Random hypothetical:

Would you go back in time and vote for McCain/Palin in 2008 if it would potentially set a different chain of events in motion that wouldn't lead to President Trump?

I think I would, at least today.

Hillary or McCain 2008. Obama or Hillary or Romney 2012. Obama 2016. Damn you Barack for being too good in 2008!

Palin was the first taste of it. At least on a national stage. This has been coming for a decade it seems.

rigged?
@Nate_Cohn
Pretty incredible that Clinton's two losses--the '08 dem. primary (arguable, to be fair) and 2016--were popular vote victories
7:51 AM - 9 Nov 2016

i get it, she lost swing states. it's still amazing we do our election that way.

her message got to people just not the RIGHT people in the right states. should've touted her economic plans more than social plans, i guess.

I don't know who wouldn't, with the Supreme Court and pretty much everything Obama did in the past 8 years going to be wiped away, I think you roll the dice on the other option.

"Get out and vote no to protect your rights!" is an easily digestible message that encourages people to be proactive.

"Keep Trump out of office!" isn't really a call to action. It doesn't encourage support so much as it discourages Trump votes.

if RBG, Kennedy, and Breyer can last four more years, we might be ok.

RBG is just very old, unfortunately.

I really dont think she has that broad of appeal. She has name recognition.

It needs to be Booker or a silicon valley type or someone geographically better-positioned.

i agree that would be hard...that's also why i think bernie would've been hard. anyone would've been hard in this election. trump gave the Democrats a gift and it was blown. plain and simple. i keep hearing people wanted a fighter and a populist...then there ya go, there's Liz.

there isn't much of a bench. the losses the Democrats have had over the past 8 years on the state level is real and it's deep. 2018 is going to be more losses.
