Home insurance cancelled our policy while we were on vacation because we didn't respond to a letter they sent about our trees. We were away for a week.

Could be worse: our first-day speaker was a former student/ star athlete who was working part-time for a landscaping company last year and lost her leg when it slid down a hill and on top of her.

You need a new insurance company.

I say take your chances for a few months. You probably won't need the coverage anyway.

Think it is pretty cool that that a lot of the youngsters LLWS list ACDC and Thunderstruck as their favorite. Talk about crossing generations

This was the cheapest policy by a lot, plus it saved me like ~$15 a month on my car insurance. Just going to call them today with a wtf?

Yeah and once you take care of it, it may be worth it to call your mortgage company and let them know. Your insurance provider is supposed to notify your mortgage lender if the policy is cancelled. Then if you don't have insurance your lender can force place a policy and just include it in your escrow payments.

Insurance companies can't just cancel your policy like that. They have to comply with the terms of their own policies, which are often governed by state law and almost always use universal language.

Generally, once the policy has been in place for 60 days, homeowners insurers cannot cancel your policy unless you have failed to pay, committed fraud, or made material misrepresentations during the application. There's a few other ways that they can cancel a policy due to material changes in the property condition, such as vacancy of the house, substantial deterioration, etc. But even then, they have to give a Notice of Cancellation with an opportunity for the insured to cure the problem--typically this is a 30-day period. If they continue down this route, file a complaint with your state's Bureau of Insurance.
