77 dead, 3 months of state of emergency and forth coming drone strikes I'm sure. Typical Bastille day!

I think about this a lot. The amount of reconciliation that needs to happen between Western cultural and the Middle East is just so staggering. Even if we eliminate ISIS right now it doesn't mean Arabs living abroad won't be under constant scrutiny, won't be the target of hate and fear. That's going to go on for generations. It's just fucking heart breaking, it feels endless. I don't believe we'll see peace in our lifetimes.

maybe more coca cola commercials where Jews and Arabs are holding hands with other people in a field, waving back in forth in the comfort created by that delicious, sugary beverage would help?

I think scale-able alternatives to oil/gas would help a lot. Less reason for the US/Europe to fuck around in the Middle East and buddy up with shit heads. We'd still need oil for plastics/fertilizer but the demand would be a lot lower obviously.

There is no solution. A disturbed individual can latch onto any of a number of available "ideologies" that enables him to leverage whatever technology happens to be available to do a lot of harm.

I've long said that there really is no need to worry much about weapons of mass destruction--our intelligence and security services are well equipped to counter those efforts--the materials needed to make such weapons can be tracked, the people with the expertise or trying to acquire the expertise to deploy those weapons can be identified and stopped.

We probably do not need to worry about massive well coordinate 9/11 type attacks either--again, I think our security and intelligence services are well-equipped to sniff those out.

We live in a world that is for many reasons deeply alienating to many people. The alienation gives rise to anger and anger gives rise to violence.

would the West leaving have a positive impact at this point? we'd probably just have a loose confederation of a Pan-Arab state, which is fine, every people should have a right to self-determination, but it'd be led by the worst, most extreme elements, and they'd have so much more money and resources.

We have a great track record of forcing our form of government on other cultures, so I can see how it might be a good idea to keep trying.

let's pretend we figure out better batteries and fusion and the demand for oil plummets

wouldn't that destroy their economy to the point where the whole populace would want to war even more?

Hadn't seen the name. What I had seen was that he was either Tunisian or French from a Tunisian family.

So if they're US citizens who are from the US, we should deport them… where, exactly?

How does this go down?

"Sir, do you believe in Sharia law?"

"No."

"Ok then. Carry on."
