The Pentagon misled Congress by using inaccurate or vague information about sexual assault cases in an effort to blunt support for a Senate bill that would make a major change in how the military handles allegations of sexual misconduct, an Associated Press investigation found.
Internal government records that summarized the outcomes of dozens of cases portrayed civilian district attorneys and local police forces as less willing than senior military officers to punish sex offenders. The documents buttressed the Pentagon's position that stripping commanders of their authority to decide which crimes go to trial — as the Senate legislation proposes — will mean fewer victims will get justice because there will be fewer prosecutions.
But in a number of the cases, the steps taken by civilian authorities were described incorrectly or omitted, according to AP research and interviews. Other case descriptions were too imprecise to be verified.

Isn't that a state law? It's only for party switches or choosing a party if registered independent. I think voter registration deadline for new voters was about a month ago.MoBettle wrote:It seems pretty hypocritical of democrats to cry about voter suppression but in New York you had to have registered back in freaking October 2015 to vote in their primary.

I do agree it's extremely stupid and prohibitively early. Probably makes re-election easier which is why it's stuck around.MoBettle wrote:JUburton wrote:Isn't that a state law? It is a state law, and a pretty hypocritical one if they really care about making it easy for people to vote.

Who is "they?" New York is a state with a split party legislature (Dems hold lower house, Republicans hold higher house).

A party committee will consider the resolutions for debate on the floor of the state GOP convention in Dallas May 12-14. The volume of independence resolutions -- from which party leaders are quick to distance themselves -- increases the possibility they could be approved for discussion, though the notion of secession would certainly be shot down swiftly on the convention floor.
Even Houston's Jared Woodfill, a tea party activist running to unseat Mechler as state party chairman, has been an ally.
"I absolutely think the people should have an opportunity to vote on this issue," he said.
For the record, the Supreme Court ruled in 1869 that states do not have a right to secede. Secessionists contend that the nation's laws are irrelevant once a state declares independence. However, they would compel the federal government to use force against any Texas rebellion, evoking recollections of the state's last disastrous attempt to secede.
