I forget who but the most recent Vox 'weeds' podcast had someone who thinks Trump is just trying to go after winning the bound delegates since he has no chance with swaying party establishment types or Cruz types to his side. Since they reduced Lewandowski's role and brought in more 'mainstream' campaign help they've focused on California and NY as their linchpins in the race and just letting Cruz get delegates because they want it to end at hte 1st ballot or make it look really bad if the 'party takes it away' from him on the 2nd ballot.
