If he had stayed, they would have skewered him for it.

Really, who cares what the right says at this point? Their platform is the opposite of whatever Obama does, even if he does what they originally suggested (see Obamacare). Aside from cutting taxes for the rich and making businesses as important as citizens (you know, actual people), what do they believe in? They shut down the House out of fear that someone would notice how they're voting.

The US wasn't allowed to stay.

And I'm glad we left. I'm sad we are back.

I'm pretty disappointed that ALL of his advisors recommended one thing and he blew them off. Now we have to try to blow up 40,000 "fighters" from all over the world. At least we seem to have the Kurds on our side. They are pretty bad ass. Jordan is pretty good to have as allies although their military sucks.

I remember calling the Arty guy from division HQ the night we started bombing Iraq back in the good war, Desert Storm. I told him we launched 200 Tomahawk missiles. He asked me if they were conventional or nuclear. Criminy sakes dude, who do you think is in charge -- Dr. Strangelove?

I was still a bit flustered, but then I let my buddy, Chilly Will know what was going on.

Me: "Dude, we just launched a bunch of Tomahawks and bombers on Baghdad and stuff."

Chilly Will: "Cool."

That calmed me down. Chilly Will was kewl.

Strategically it certainly would have made sense, but let's remember we hadn't exactly won over too many hearts and minds during and after the war. Plus the government wanted us out. I'm hesitant to believe that over the past few years the US would have been more of a stabilizing element than simply a unifying target. I disagree that Obama couldn't afford to keep a small force there politically, and I don't think he saw it that way either, except that the US would have literally had to force themselves in. Where he didn't have the political capital was if something like the Beirut barracks bombing had occurred, at which point he would not have been able to cut and run but would have had to escalate hostilities or be rendered totally ineffectual at home. And I don't think that would have been an unlikely occurrence.

or we could have never gone in the first place. Second guessing is fun.

Anyway, I just don't understand what we get out of being involved in this hell hole in the first place. Get out of the middle east and stay out. It's a clusterfuck and a boondoggle. Can't we find some other way to stimulate our economy that doesn't involve blowing someone up and perpetuating hatred?

Gunmen in Pakistan kill professor who stated non-Muslims can marry Muslims:
Dr Muhammad Shakil Auj, the dean of the faculty of Islamic Studies at the university in the southern port city of Karachi, had received threats following complaints that his teaching was too liberal, a colleague said.

Among the articles the 54-year-old had written was one arguing that Muslim women should be allowed to marry non-Muslim men, the colleague said.

On Thursday morning, two gunmen riding a motorcycle fired on the car taking Auj to a function at an Iranian cultural centre in the city, police said.

"A bullet pierced through his head, proving fatal," senior police officer Pir Mohammad Shah told reporters.

"We are investigating the killing. It would be premature to state the motive at the moment." In 2012, Auj had complained to police that four colleagues had threatened him and sent him text messages accusing him of blasphemy, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Nasir Lodhi.

The crime is not defined by law, so anyone can file a case saying their religious feelings have been hurt. Frequently, those accused of the crime who are not lynched on the spot can find themselves jailed indefinitely.

Judges and lawyers are often too afraid to show up in court to try the cases, as mere description of the offense can itself often be viewed as a fresh offence.

Another university professor, who taught English, is in jail for blasphemy after students complained about a posting he made on social media website Facebook. His lawyer, a prominent human rights activist, was shot dead by gunmen in May.
