LG - what are your thoughts? based on what you've stated in the past, i imagine you're preliminary conclusion is that this isn't enough.

i still don't believe we have anything close to a complete, cohesive plan.

what about all the americans who are over there fighting for ISIS?

The strategy the POTUS outlined is good. It's clear, easy to follow, gets the Allies invigorated, and has a clear objective (destroy ISIS).

It's the operational approach I have an issue with. It's very, very risky to use proxy forces as they can be bought off, or they just decide not to stay and fight. Happened to us in Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan in 01. I think the reliance on airpower sounds great, but again, it's not militarily decisive. The plan just has a lot of risk, not necessarily risk to military defeat, but I just have this nagging feeling that this isn't going to be very decisive and is going to take a lot longer then what we think, even if it is successful in the long run

I think there are two unstated objectives as well. The first is that this is the LAST chance for Iraq to maintain its current status as a viable country. The second is that this also sets conditions for a truly independent Kurdistan.

This strategy of taking out terrorists who threaten us, while supporting partners on the front lines, is one that we have successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia for years.

Pretty bleeding narrow definition of successfully pursued

Im generally against this. Congress also needs to vote on it.

Years ago a sketch comedy show had a bit about the American Gladiators fighting for us in wartime.

I think we should do that. Send them. In the Atlasphere things.

We should produce some of those fighting robots from that TV show. Like a bunch of these 8ft tall bad boys marching through Mosul and Raqqa wouldn't scare the crap out of 'em...

And lasers. It's about time we develop lethal laser weaponry for the military that leaves a 10" hole in an enemy combatant, armored or not, that's instantly cauterized. Killing terrorists in a most horrific and gruesome manner and leaving a lead-free environment is a win-win.

And put some of those lasers on the above mentioned robots...

Could we send policemen from Ferguson?

They like their army stuff so much, let them see how it was intended to be used rather than against unarmed US citizens yelling insults and throwing an occasional bottle.

We have over crowded prisons. Send a bunch of convicts over. If they survive, they get out of their prison sentence. It worked in the Dirty Dozen.

At this point I feel like Canadians have more personal freedoms than we do, land of the free my ass. The whole concept of civil forfeiture is grotesque and it's ridiculous that it happens do frequently in this country. Also, between forfeiture becoming a common practice, the rampant militarization of police as evidenced in Ferguson, the highest incarceration rate in the world, and never ending wars overseas I'm pretty disillusioned with this country right now. I'm hopeful people are slowly waking up to these facts but it's disheartening to see what's going on.

97% of the eligable voting population now registered to vote. 90% turnout on the day doesn't seem so far fetched any more.

Yeah, the Air Force is getting destroyed over this right now because not only of this, but someone in the Air Force changed the oath of reenlistment in 2013...it used to be optional.
