i think i posted on here a few years ago my struggles with how offended i should or shouldn't feel when people use the 'r' word. it's tough but as in anything, it's all about context. a co-worker of mine this week used "like that kid on the short bus" in a sales meeting and i could have beat the fuck out of him.

I think I stopped more because I thought it was lazy, I don't really have a strong issue with the word. I differentiate it from racial slurs as while it is almost always used as an insult, I don't think of it as based on a long history of hate and/or violence.

neither of those bother me currently or would have ever bothered me. obviously it's a combination of words, one of which being a poor choice of words, but i make poor choices all the time. it's the actively mocking of the physically or mentally challenged that would ever really bother me
