This game is like a gateway boardgame into an entire subsculture of German board games. And I mean that as a good thing.
(I regularly play Catan and Dominion with associated expansion packs, but have accumulated others -- Ticket to Ride, Avalon, Puerto Rico, etc -- that I periodically play.)
