Rail on the NRA all you want. Just be aware that the reason politicians are afraid of the gun rights folks isn't because they have a lot of money but because they can mobilize a loyal constituency that is very good at turning out to vote.

never underestimate the power of jaw-dropping stupidity

Russia giving Iran 300 air defense missile systems, and a nuclear power plant. Putin just owning.

Any group needs money to get their message out, so of course money isn't irrelevant. But it's not what makes the NRA powerful compared to most other groups.

The recall battle drew more than $3.5 million in campaign contributions. But the vast majority of the funds - nearly $3 million - came from opponents of the recall drive who support stricter gun control, figures from the secretary of state's office showed.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns, wrote a $350,000 personal check to the anti-recall campaigns. Los Angeles billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad kicked in another $250,000 to stave off the recalls.

After claiming victory late on Tuesday, Herpin said the push to derail the recall had "backfired" on the gun control lobby.

"In Colorado, we don't need some New York billionaire telling us what size soft drinks we can have, how much salt to put on our food, or the size of the ammunition magazines on our guns," he said.

Only about $500,000 came from the pro-gun lobby, mainly $368,000 donated by the National Rifle Association, the nation's biggest pro-gun lobby, which feted Morse's ouster late on Tuesday.

A Colorado Springs Democrat, Morse trailed 50.96 percent to 49.04 percent, according to unofficial results from the Colorado Secretary of State's office.

Herpin, a douchenozzle CO Springs councilman, acts like the Morse win was a landslide

That opposition gained me the grass roots support I needed among my own party to win the nomination, and then in turn to be elected President of the United States. No one is more aware than I am of the consequences of our long engagement in both Iraq and Afghanistan, of how many Americans are tired of international conflict, and of how much everyone longs for the leaders in Washington to concentrate their efforts on improving conditions here at home. Considering that, please believe me when I say that there is both an abundance of proof and moral imperative justifying the use of military force of the United States - I would certainly recommend another solution, as I have in the past, if I could do so in good conscience. I am costing myself deeply among some of the folks who were my most ardent supporters, but I feel that, given what we know, I must. I ask you to look at the evidence we have made available for yourselves, and ask yourself: knowing what I know, if i were the commander-in-chief, what would I do?"

Or words to that effect.

Correction.

Russia is going to sell the S-300 Air Defense system to the Iranians. They are the top of the line variant. Can track and shoot down multiple targets up to 150KM away, including cruise missiles.

Generally our USAF pilot brethren shat bricks when ever these or "double digit" SAMS such as the SA-20 were mentioned.

It's a real big deal.

Appreciate the insight on how effective the systems are. Question - would this have played out differently if we handled Syria better? Seems that Iran is calling our bluff, and if Israel was contemplating anything, it now will be significantly harder to do.

It's a civil war based on a religious split. Nothing good comes from intervening in these situations, especially when both sides are generally despicable towards the US.

We have no bluff to call. The entire situation is predicated over use of chemical weapons and whether we should get involved or not due to a moral and legal stance.

I used the analogy of a large house fire a few weeks ago, and this is still a large house fire. The trick and art of this is understand how the fire may spread to other houses and how to contain the fire within the borders of the single house. Add in the fact that the neighborhood is suffering from extremely dry conditions which amplify the risk of the fire spreading...is it too late, too early?

It's a real tough call. I'd sit back and let things develop because we're not really talking about prime real estate here. Some renewal may be good for the neighborhood.

A journalist murdering authoritarian jackoff taking to our paper of record to lecture/troll our president with empty words and lies. Gross.

I'm glad we have such a fine diplomat on the national stage like putin to save us from that dictator obama and his war of lies where obama got exactly what he wanted without one bomb being dropped.

Menendez just did two segments with Jake Tapper on a Syria special. Said the NYT op-ed made him want to vomit, and that Putin's living in a parallel universe in blaming the rebels for the chem weapons attack. Also he may have had a few glasses of wine at dinner.

Greenwald promoting the Oathkeepers:
The “coalition of current and former military, police, and other public officials” that Greenwald so gleefully ballyhoos in the above tweet is the Oath Keepers. Greenwald of course doesn’t call them by name; he leaves that important detail out. The reason is that the Oath Keepers are a lunatic far-right militia who believe, among other things, that Barack Obama is a card-carrying communist, the U.N. is going to put troops on American soil, and our nation’s cities will soon be turned into concentration camps under the control of FEMA.

1. We will NOT obey orders to disarm the American people.
2. We will NOT obey orders to conduct warrantless searches of the American people.
3. We will NOT obey orders to detain American citizens as ‘unlawful enemy combatants’ or to subject them to military tribunal.
4. We will NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a ‘state of emergency’ on a state.
5. We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty.
6. We will NOT obey any order to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.
7. We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.
8. We will NOT obey orders to assist or support the use of any foreign troops on U.S. soil against the American people to ‘keep the peace’ or to ‘maintain control.’
9. We will NOT obey any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies.
10. We will NOT obey any orders which infringe on the right of the people to free speech, to peaceably assemble, and to petition their government for a redress of grievances.
