You're allowed to set their car on fire if they do this

the pump tells you not to leave your car at the pump so it's not "literally their business model".

I'm moving into a new apartment tomorrow. I know people are just trying to be nice, but STOP GIVING ME STUFF. "Oh, so you're moving into a one bedroom apartment, huh? Well here, take all this crap we don't want in our big ol' house anymore. We don't have room for it." Thanks?

Probably because they have employees at the pumps who are supposed to tell the dicks not to be dicks.

It's less dickish if you do it when it's not busy. And it's a bit different in Jersey as you aren't actually doing the gas pumping part of the equation, so if you're just grabbing something quick, you might be back about when the guy is done filling your tank.

Still, unless you're sure you won't be inconveniencing others by blocking a pump, waste your own time by waiting for after getting gas before going in. Don't waste other people's time. That's awful.

Many gas stations give you a discount for using cash.

I think it's more they charge you a fee for using credit.

Many have stopped doing that too. See lots of "credit same as cash" signs

I had a membersip since I was 18 and never used it until I had to get my car towed twice last year and I locked my keys in my car twice. It definitely comes in handy.

IIRC, a few months ago an additional credit card fee was implimented due to a lawsuit settlement between MasterCard & Visa and card-issuing banks. Gas stations only make about 5 cents per gallon profit and the new fee, around 3%, works out to around 10 cents per gallon. Retailers can eat the additional fee since their profit margins are substantially higher, but I wouldn't be surprised if many didn't just raise prices instead.
