She's a weird politician. I've been in medium sized meetings/briefings with her, and she comes off as really smart and pretty warm. I think she's awful, just horrible, on the stump. And she seems to be a decent debater.

Yeah, she was fine. Kind of reminded me of Romney during 2012. Solid, but looked better than she was due to the competition. It was amusing at one point when she and Thompson ganged up on DeBlasio. She was drubbing him over attacking her with lies about racial profiling, but he was unapologetic in the face of reason.

Truth is I don't think any of the candidates are likely to be successful mayors. Bloomberg rewrote the rules of city politics in ways we don't yet understand, and right now it's likely impossible to look good whether you present as a pale imitation (Quinn, Lhota) or a clear repudiation (all the other Ds). People dislike Bloomberg, but mostly like what he's done. The ideal candidate this year might be s/he who blasts Bloomberg on the stump while pledging to keep most of his policies.

I respect Quinn's toughness, I know she hires well, and as an incrementalist and establishmentarian I'm confident she wouldn't screw things up too badly. Lhota has management chops, he's not crazy, and I'd kind of enjoy seeing our idiotic and corrupt D machine lose yet again in a city where they--we, I guess--outnumber the Rs six to one. Thompson is a grown-up, and if it weren't for the UFT endorsement I'd probably be fine with him.

Most of the other Ds seem more interested in winning the NYT endorsement than governing the City per se.

Louisiana Republicans unsure if Bush or Obama is to blame for Hurricane Katrina response:
A significant chunk of Louisiana Republicans evidently believe that President Barack Obama is to blame for the poor response to the hurricane that ravaged their state more than three years before he took office.

The latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling, provided exclusively to TPM, showed an eye-popping divide among Republicans in the Bayou State when it comes to accountability for the government's post-Katrina blunders.

Twenty-eight percent said they think former President George W. Bush, who was in office at the time, was more responsible for the poor federal response while 29 percent said Obama, who was still a freshman U.S. Senator when the storm battered the Gulf Coast in 2005, was more responsible. Nearly half of Louisiana Republicans — 44 percent — said they aren't sure who to blame.

Bush was criticized heavily when he did not immediately return to Washington from his vacation in Texas after the storm had reached landfall. The government was also slow to provide relief aid and Michael Brown, then-director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), admitted in a televised interview that he learned that many of the storm's victims at the New Orleans Convention Center were without food and water well after the situation had been reported in the press.

Brown's handling of the response ultimately led to his resignation, but Bush offered an infamous endorsement of the FEMA chief only days before he stepped down.

"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job," Bush said.

Of course a significant chunk of LA Dems would tell you that if not for Barry's executive response it would have been a lot worse.

Those poll results are fun, but far from fair

Manning gets 35 years, 4 of which are already served. Eligible for parole in 6.5 years.

What we know he'll do is spend his money through the foundation and advocate for the causes he's prioritized as mayor: public health (he has a piece in Friday's NYT blasting the Obama administration for not taking a harder line on international tobacco control), gun violence, sustainability/climate change, maybe marriage equality, maybe economic opportunity (though I doubt it--he went in that direction to salt away the second term, then stayed on it because abandoning it would have opened him up to attacks).

What he also might also do is totally get up in his successor's face and make it really difficult for her/him to succeed. If it's Quinn, probably not, because she's going to try to stay the course and also because he's weirdly chivalric (and/or PC) like that; if it's De Blasio or one of the other lefty Dems, I think it's pretty likely. Was having coffee with a former colleague today and he made a great point: the press essentially has taken it very easy on Bloomberg the last twelve years, both because he goes to parties with the folks who own media outlets and because the reporters on the ground are fucking terrified of what he can do to them (in part because he parties with their ultimate bosses). At least the first part won't change when he's out of power, and I suspect he's going to look very good by comparison with whoever comes next.

he's against hurricane sandy funding. good luck, idiot

he said SNAP wasnt around when his mom was a single mother...not true, but it's a good slogan. he's certainly gunning for a tv show or talking head spot or something.

'there's nothing cory booker is different on with barack obama'. good luck running on that in NJ
