What is a really really white life?

How would you feel if I said you are a typical minority? What kind of person makes a comment like that other than to insult due to race?

Why not just ignore my posts in this thread then?

We're not in some post racial America where it is ok for you to say that about a minority

As with Chad Durbin, I'm proud to say I loathed Malcolm Smith before it was cool. This isn't his first wallow in sleaze, and he's almost Louie Gohmert-level dumb to boot.

If the writers from "Two and a Half Men" (or whatever your terrible TV show of choice) had done "The Wire," Clay Davis would have been Malcolm Smith.

pacino wrote:bipartisanship in NY!:
New York State Senator Malcolm Smith and New York City Councilman Dan Halloran have been arrested as part of a plot to rig the New York City mayor's race.

Smith allegedly tried to bribe leaders of Republican Party county committees around New York City in an attempt to run for mayor as a Republican.

Smith was a registered Democrat.

CBS 2 New York reported other charged people included: Bronx County Republican Party Chairman Joseph Savino, 45; Queens County Republican Party Vice Chairman Vincent Tabone, 46; Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin, 49; and Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret, 55.

In a Jan. 25 meeting in Smith's car in Rockland County, the cooperating witness told Smith that buying the help of Republican county committee leaders would cost "a pretty penny" and asked if it's "worth any price," the complaint said.

The FBI said Smith responded: "Look, talk to me before you close it. But it's worth it. Because you know how big a deal it is."

Actually, we would do better if we mostly eliminated interview shows altogether and replaced them with actual news reporting.

Florida lawmakers look to ban EBT use at strip clubs, casinos, liquor stores
Florida lawmakers are considering legislation that would ban those receiving government assistance from using their electronic benefits (EBT) cards at strip clubs, casinos and liquor stores.

Florida’s House Healthy Families Subcommittee on Wednesday approved a House bill, HB 701, introduced by Republican state Rep. Jimmie Smith to that end.

Those enrolled in food assistance programs or on temporary cash assistance generally access those benefits via EBT cards, which work like a credit or debit card.
...

Last April an Action News Jacksonville investigation revealed that some Floridians have been using their EBT cards at ATMs in strip clubs, bars and gambling facilities.

Update: An earlier version of this story referenced the bill as filed. The provision banning EBT use in gun shops was stripped out in committee.

Proposal would allow state religion in North Carolina

A bill filed by Republican lawmakers would allow North Carolina to declare an official religion, in violation of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Bill of Rights, and seeks to nullify any federal ruling against Christian prayer by public bodies statewide.

The legislation grew out of a dispute between the American Civil Liberties Union and the Rowan County Board of Commissioners. In a federal lawsuit filed last month, the ACLU says the board has opened 97 percent of its meetings since 2007 with explicitly Christian prayers.
...

House Bill 494, a resolution filed by Republican Rowan County Reps. Harry Warren and Carl Ford, would refuse to acknowledge the force of any judicial ruling on prayer in North Carolina – or indeed on any Constitutional topic:

it's already illegal to use SNAP and TANF for liquor, smokes and drugs. not sure what else this does??? does it seek to crack down on the BUSINESSES scamming the state, or the poor people?

here's the story that broke the news.

With the help of FMS, Inc. a Virginia-based software and database developing firm, NBC2 individually sorted through 1.3 million transactions made from 2009 to April, 2011, totaling $201.8 million dollars.

NBC2 found $190,733 withdrawn inside locations like liquor stores, strip clubs, bowling alleys, bars and bingo parlors. The majority of the establishments had state liquor licenses. (see where this money was withdrawn in the charts below the story)

we're talking about 0.0009% of the total amount of transactions. so yeah, pretty reasonable

if the cost/benefit isn't worth it, fine, but I don't think it's unjust

what, a poor person can't go bowling once in a while?

in any event, once it's in their hands, it's their money. that's my view.

Id rather we actually give people a chance at success before we prevent them from spending money on this and that.

It's not their money, its the taxpayers money. We've entered into a social contract in which we help them pay for everything in their life and there really is no quid pro quo coming back the other direction. Changing this so it's not an "entitlement" but an exchange where their expected to do their part I exchange for free $, would go along way to correcting the horrible system in place which does little besides create wards of the state. The system is rife with fraud, any steps to correct this, including the provision mentioned above is long overdue IMO and doesn't go far enough.

it's really not all that rife with fraud, and the fraud that does happen usually comes on the provider end in Medicaid.
