just to defend a pal, I agree with jh that, whatever we want to call it, something like a racial grievance lobby exists. surely, guys like Al Sharpton have acted like clowns for money and influence

on the whole, the NAACP is usually on the right side of both history and current political issues and topics. I'm jabbing at this particular NAACP chapter because they're obivously influenced by big companies here. Calling the NAACP a 'racial grievance lobby' demeans and dismisses them as not part of the normal conversation. it's a calculated move by many to call them that to delegitimize a completely mainstream political and human rights organization, and it's outright wrong. civil rights are not a fucking grievance.

it's not fucking "grievance"

black people couldn't vote 50 years ago. historically disadvantaged people (and that's putting it mildly) have an agenda to try and promote and better their community? no way

it's a good one, bucky. but there is substantial evidence to suggest that the cheapest foods are often the unhealthiest (i.e. sugar-iest for the most part).

i dunno. banning 64oz sodas might sound worse than it actually is on the face of it because i don't think there is enough education about just how much damage they can do, esp to younger kids. the FDA has never even set a %daily amount of sugar that you should intake in your diet. in the long run, the health benefits likely outweigh the short-term money saving.

the good thing about it is it forces politicians to provide competing solutions that are more sweeping and effective in the long-term, and forces conversations about healthy eating habits in households to commence.

Agreed. And maybe someone will address why water costs more than sugar-laden soda.

ok, fine, but calling it a Civil Rights Lobby in the same paragraph where they're basically doing some pay-to-play with Coke is just as backwards

ok so the naacp siding with coke on this issue warrants calling them "racial grievance lobby?"

i just wanna say that life is tremendously more difficult in america for people born a) poor and b) minorites. you're extra-fucked if you're both. even poor or lower middle-class white people don't have to worry about as many obstacles in life simply by virtue of being a white person. you're playing life at a lower difficulty level. sometimes the naacp has to do some shitty stuff like this but lets not equate them to the gun lobby or the big oil lobby, who only act in their own financial interest. in terms of the big picture the naacp has been and continues to be a defender of the under-represented in our populace.

really wish we had some more darkies on bsg sometimes (sorry ptk and karn).

re-reading all that it sounds kinda whiny i guess but whatever

yes, some people have exploited their position as advocates for minorities for personal financial gain.
