"We should not take a package put together by a bunch of octogenarians on New Year's Eve."

-- Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH), quoted by the Washington Post, referring to Vice President Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who crafted the fiscal cliff agreement.

Seems like the house is going to amend to add spending cuts which will kill it until the next session.

Says Mike Allen.

It's a big joke and everyone is just playing along. If we had a news media worth a shit they would be trying to make sure people understand this instead of hyping the big showdown cliff bullshit.

from a republican standpoint, i understand their unhappiness with the lack of spending cuts. but what i haven't seen are:

* realistic alternative solutions
* how they will explain to their constituents that they sat by and watched massive tax increases kick in, doing nothing to stop it.

I think I'm about ready for the Democrats to be as irresponsible as the Republicans. We seem to have reached the point where it's more important to break the pattern of hostage-taking than to solve the immediate problem.

Paul probably would suggest that this whole debacle is largely a result of the collapse of the parties, which once had tools to command obedience, and the steady weakening of an "establishment" that formerly could apply additional pressure from the center. Tough to argue otherwise.

True. But the major concern is how the markets will react when they open tomorrow.
