This one is, but I'm basically breaking even when you factor in utilities, gym, commute, etc. No tax refund at the end of the year, but no surprise repair bills either. The other factor is my house is old and the roof/water heater/siding could go any time

I wish I had done that for longer
Bought this house partly out of peer pressure and partly to chase the 8K tax credit, which was dumb, but glad to have learned how it all works and broken even
pacino wrote:my parents built a house new about 16 years ago. about 3 years ago all of it went to crap, so they've had to buy all new appliances, get some patching done, etc
new homes are surprisingly cheaply built and also overvalued, so im so not going that way. refurb seems to be the way to go.

my current path. plan on using my 401k as my downpayment. think i can be completely 100% debt free in less than a year in my current situation and by then i'm hoping to have 40k in my 401.

really depends on the builder. make sure you look at the other places they've built, that's all. some refurbs will set you back for years and years and you won't know until it's too late
