Random Rad Thoughts

I'm thinking about grad school too. Not sure what my job prospects are after this election though. If the guy I'm working for wins, he'll probably offer me a job in Harrisburg. If not, I'll find something around here with another politician, live at home, and probably go to grad school. I have to further my education anyway if I want to work in politics, so I might as well get it done now while I can. It still kinda sucks that I didn't finish student teaching, but I'm not gonna have any regrets about that looking at the way everything is going right now in the state.

Naturally, my response is to go deeper into debt and have more loans. Yay

there was a list of the top 5 more useless grad school degrees like a month ago and meteorology was #1, i'm pretty sure. unless you want to teach or go into research it's mainly useless.

My condolences that your upside is Harrisburg.

for some reason that general advice thread i had started back in 2009 for grad school questions is now locked.

anyway, having worked for the last two years (with the last 12 months being in a lab), i really want to go back to school. taking the year off (two actually) really helped me realize how much real jobs suck and how much i miss being a student. and i don't want to study chemistry at all, i'm thinking more about health/environmental policy even though i have no experience in either field. also i am really intrigued by professional science masters programs. Rice university has a PSM in "Bioscience Research and Health Policy," shit seems to be right up my alley.

i had told my professors last summer that i'd be haranguing them for rec letters again, i hope those assholes haven't forgotten.

I'm thinking about taking on a part time job of some sort. Nights and weekends only. Need some moolah.

I sold cellphones 5 years ago for AT&T part time. I made like 1500/mo doing that, it was great cash wise. They have a system that tells you all the people who got phones at that store that went over their texts/min/data the month before so I'd call them and tell them if they upgraded their plan it would save them $xx over what they paid in overage. A lot of people would just hang up on you, but plenty say "sure". Then you get 50% of the monthly plan a amount. So, I'd always try to upgrade them to unlimited data or messaging, everyone you got to do that was $15. In a good hour, you could easily get 5 of them. Then you get the folks that come in store. For some reason most of the sales people loved selling expensive phones, but we didn't make anything on the device, just accessories and plans, so I'd always sell the cheapest phone and expensive add-ons and accessories. It was funny, if you steered people to the free phone they'd trust you when you told them they needed a $20/mo media net package and a $50 car charger belt case combo pack.

My stepdad did something similar selling windows with Sears. He was their top salesmen for a while but he told me he could barely sleep at night.

I had a friend who worked for Comcast. He definitely signed a few families up for premium channels after only talking to the 13-year-old son.

And believe it or not, everyone else that worked there was wayyyy sleazier than I. I would actually sell the people the things that I put on their account. The others would just put things on and let the customer complain to get it off their bill. The one guy was a one handed mma fighter, he was genuinely frightening. Every story he told ended with "... And then I stuck it in her butt".
