According to lifehacker, if you separate bananas they will ripen slower. My anecdotal evidence seems to confirm this. If you'd like them to ripen quicker, put them in a bag. Something to do with gasses they give off just sitting there that speeds the ripening process when concentrated.

all fruits do this because they give off ethylene, which concentrates faster when they're kept together.

My flight from Denver to SF got hit by lightning, then we got stuck in the air because SFO was in a complete holding pattern because of turbulence. Almost ran out of fuel while circling, then got caught up in turbulence. Finally Oakland was able to free up a runway for us. One hell of a ride.
