Has anyone seen even a remotely "balancing" layperson's account of Virginia's version of the "a fertilized egg is a person" legislation?

I haven't looked hard, but if there's something that could be counted as a reasoned defense of it I would have thought a lazy slob like me would have stumbled on it by now.

UPDATE: ok, so the VA legislature emitted a slew of unfertilized legislation regarding fertilization. the ultrasound thing and the "cell globs are people" thing are siblings, so to speak. McDonell's only sure he'll sign the ultrasound thing (I hear with the amendment that he reserves the right to witness any such procedure personally).

the gob of excrement with lips pictured is reported to have asserted on the floor of VA's House of Delegates, in support of the ultrasound requirement, that "...in the vast majority of these cases [instances of abortion], these [abortions] are matters of lifestyle convenience.”

"[abortions] are matters of lifestyle convenience." FFS This is a position that I cannot even grasp. As a man even I understand that the trauma associated with this procedure is life altering and has permanent fall out. The idea that this is like buying a pair of stylish sneakers is repugnant. Make no mistake, abortion is tragic and no normal person is "pro" abortion, but equating it to a lifestyle choice is ugly. Now if these women had access to affordable birth control and some family education, which may well fall on deaf ears, this whole stupid topic could be avoided.

Depending where this guy represents, the Norfolk/Tidewater Tides were a Mets 3A affiliate from 1969-2006 obviously playing in the very large SE VA population center. There was even a ballpark named Mets Park in Norfolk. So, he certainly could be or should I say deserves to be a Mets fan. If not, you can still lay down some hate on him as the other likely choice which would be that he could be a Braves fan.

Why do mothers get abortions?

It's because they don't think they can afford to raise the child, or they didnt want a child until later in life (ie. planning to go to college in the fall), or they have health problems that put the child or mother in jeopardy, or because the child has an irregularity such as trisomy 13 or 18. I would guess that the majority of abortions have nothing to do with the health of the mother; a lifestyle choice. Abortions aren't "convenient," but kids are inconvenient.

And don't pretend that abortions would end and this topic would be avoided if birth control was free and every person received family education. People are flawed, and make rash decisions in the heat of the moment, and get pregnant even with all the education in the world.

The reasons teens most frequently give for having an abortion are that they are concerned about how having a baby would change their lives, cannot afford a baby now and do not feel mature enough to raise a child.

Loving the VA politics discussion lately, even if I can't comment on it. Watched the Capitol Square personhood rally from my office window yesterday.

BTW, Todd Gilbert is a former prosecutor from northwest Virginia. Born in Texas, but I think he grew up in VA. So, he's probably not a Mets fan... good chance he's a Braves fan.

I wasn't sure who he is. I see that he represents Warren, Shenandoah, Page and Rockingham counties. That's far out there. Beautiful part of the world. Not too many people per square mile (thus it is beautiful). For the record, he apologized for his ill though comment.

You got some figures on this, smoothie, with respect to health of the mother? Or is this one of those semantical issues about what is a "lifestyle" concern?

Why does it matter? There's a risk of death during any pregnancy and a woman should and does have the right to forgoe that risk.

Surveys by Guttmacher Institute suggests otherwise. Table on p113. More mothers who got abortions named "don't want people to know I had sex or got pregnant" as a reason contributing to their decision for an abortion than "physical problems with my health" or "possible problems affecting the health of the baby."

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/journals/3711005.pdf

Note also that the Guttmacher institute studies regularly appear in Planned Parenthood publications, and they are a pro-choice organization dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health. This isn't some made-up study by pro-lifers.

Where are you getting your information?

^^^^

Edit: I dont feel like debating this again, but i just wanted to set the record straight about surveys from actual women who had abortions. It's a lifestyle choice that many feel should be endowed in the mother. Twisting semantics so that reasons such as "would interfere with job/career" (38%) fall outside of lifestyle only muddies the debate imo.

My objection is over the definition of the word lifestyle. Webster's define lifestyle as "the typical way of life of an individual, group, or culture." I cannot rationalize the definition with cultural practice in the United States.

How about that Chris Christie ordering flags in NJ to be lowered to half staff in honor of Whitney Houston. Really? REALLY?
