doormen seems to have all kinds of different ideas about it. a lot of them don't even notice, but the ones who just swipe all of them in a machine without even looking see 'expired' come up rather than 'valid' and get all thrown off their game and confused. I've been able to charm my way past anyone who's given me an issue so far, but a few have been close calls and I figure eventually someone will hold their ground on it and it will almost definitely be when I'm with a whole group of people and embarrassment potential is maximized

Makes sense. And arguing with a bouncer about why 'expired' is different than 'valid' probably isn't a good idea. The worst is when people who lost their license have to use a passport. I'd be so nervous having that out with me.

This whole Id scrutiny to get into bars gets really old as I get older. I mean I have streaks of grey hair in my goatee, do you really think I'm not 21?

I remember my brother and I got stopped leaving a liquor store a few years ago by an undercover cop, he just wanted to see id's. We were both of age, but what would he do if my brother wasn't? I bought the booze, and was bringing it back to the shore house my parents rented and the 4 of us were staying.

I've had friend with passports turned away from bars.

And I know I sound really bitchy complaining about 30 bucks, but it just plain pisses me off that I have to give PENNdot 30 bucks to.... be 29? It's a fact ffs. What about the working poor for whom 30 bucks is a big deal? Got to win that war on underage drinking.

(Yeah, I know, I could get a photo ID for only 10 bucks, but, 1) I might need to drive someone else's car someday, and 2) I suspect trying to use my rarely-seen or heard-of non-driving ID would be even tougher than my expired license.)

Can't even remember the last time I was carded but then again I pretty much only ever go to one bar anymore and it's like two blocks from my apartment so they all pretty much know me there by now.

So you're saying all those people crying about having to produce a photo id to vote have a point?

that was the biggest running joke back home when i was under 21. hell, my theory was why the lcb would want to bust their own? i had this really bad fake some chinese guy in midtown manhattan made for me. he had driver's licences from every state but it was the 90's and not the 70's and i needed something with a hologram. this thing looked like i was in some sort of high security position. people would ask for id and they would look at amazement at this id and the name i gave myself. i would tell them i lost my license for my second dui and rarely had any problems. i even had a chief of police serve me at a beer distributor that i was stupid enough to go into not knowing that his wife owned this place.

Hate this. Unless your brother looks young AND was carrying the alcohol this is borderline illegal. Cops love stretching stop and identify laws.
