i'm pretty over people's use of the word retard. i mean, given the first 25 years of my life, i'd be a hypocrite to challenge people on it and get in fist fights and shit over it; so i don't. but i've found myself feeling alot more sensitive towards it's use over the past few years given the challenges we've had with our son, and he's not even technically 'mentally retarded'; his challenges are more psychical. it just kind of blows my mind how accepted it's become in our collective vocabulary, when these kinds of terms inherently describe those who have no control over whatever it is you're trying to insult them for. for instance, there's no filter for it here but there are for other demeaning terms (and not saying there should be, i don't even view the board with filters).

recently a co-worker used various references like retard (short bus, etc), and i could have drug him out to the street and had him bite the curb.

do i need to lighten up?

sorry in advance for any bringing down of what i'm sure is intended to be a light-hearted thread. just venting

re: finger injuries, i nicked my finger 3 times while working at a deli on the slicer. 2 times were while cleaning the slicer. when i was working at a bakery 2 years ago, i cut my finger while slicing cake for samples pretty bad. felt like a real moron that day.

this and "gay" have really been getting on my nerves lately. i guess i find it's more acceptable for high schoolers and college kids to use this kind of slang, but i feel like when you're in your mid 20s you gotta stop. like you said, not about to get into any altercations about it, these uses just kind of annoy me.

definitely, and i'm totally with you on gay, etc, too. i've been working on not using that one myself. i know you can't police the way people talk and think. guess i just wish people would just use other terms to describe those who act like they should know better.

the problem is that we've all been raised with both sets of terms being used in everyday context. i get that when people say them they don't (necessarily) think gays or 'retards' should die a fiery death or anything. it's tough.

Yeah, I don't use "retard" anymore and it does bother me when I hear others say it. And I don't even have anyone I'm close to who has any sort of challenges. I guess it's just part of maturing. Sometimes I'll start to say it and I'll catch myself like "That's re…" and say "ridiculous" instead. I think over the last couple years I've become more sensitive overall to people with challenges or problems of some kind. I don't have as big a problem with "gay", though I don't say it. I guess when you're nearing 30 it sounds a little re…diculous to talk like a middle schooler.

What's an easy shortcut besides "retarded" to say "stupider than stupid?"

I tend to draw a distinction between the use of "retarded" to indicate an exceptionally stupid idea or action, and "retard" in the ad hominem sense. (Not to say that I've never called someone a retard but that I see that as worse.)
