I tooled around with the SDK a bit when it was first released a few years back. If you have any familiarity with Java and the Eclipse IDE it shouldn't be too difficult to get started. You don't even need an Android device as the SDK includes an emulator that runs fine in Windows, Mac OS, or Linux. Here's a link with probably more information than you would need:
