Here's something I've been pondering for a while. Paul's FB picture prompted me to finally write it down.

Is biking *really* environmentally sound? Hear me out here. On the surface, it definitely is. But...

Common wisdom (even amongst dieters) is that you need to consume all the "exercise calories" you burn. So there is fuel necessary for a bicyle.

Say someone has a 40 mile commute that they do on bike instead of car. That will burn off approximately 2000 calories, which the rider should then consume in food. What is the environmental impact of 2000 calories worth of food? Is it better or worse than 2 gallons of gasoline? There's much more environmental overhead in food production and distribution than one might think. Would it be "cheaper" environmentally just to take your car and not have to eat 2000 extra calories???

Inquiring minds want to know. also 160 lonely minutes daily on a bike gives someone lots of time to come up with weird poop to ponder

It probably depends in part on the food, the kind of car you would use, and so forth. I once read a carbon footprint thing that suggested 4 people running a certain distance put out more carbon into the atmosphere than 4 people driving together in a car. But Carbon dioxide is pretty much the only pollutant bike riding generates. Cars spew out carbon monoxide and other bad things.

Consider also that the car burns calories too--a lot more than you do on your bicycle. It's just the calories your car burns are hydrocarbons rather than carbohydrates. And Werthless will tell you its clearly a bad idea to convert carbohydrates (corn) into hydrocarbons (ethanol). So, I'm guessing on balance it really is better for the environment--a lot better--to bike.

i usually get a massage once a month. it's usually through groupon or some other special. i did find one by my house which is 30 dollars for an hour. none of the chicks were hot, but they did a good job. however, call me homophobic but i would run if some dude was giving me a message. the really odd part of this is that i had no problem having athletic trainers massage me while playing sports.

and what is proper massage attire? i'm usually pretty liberal with my nakedness in public, but i have these boxer length running shorts (with basket aka inner brief) that i always wear. i know you put a towel around your waist but do most people get completely naked? i don't want to come across as a prude or anything, but i just assumed it is a common courtesy for them.

finally... most of my massages range from 30-50 bucks is ten bucks a decent tip?

I think the ideal masseuse is a woman who's about a 4, to use the ol' scale: not nearly attractive enough to get you self-conscious let alone aroused, but not unattractive enough that you have thoughts like "what is this beast that's touching me"?

Though it might be that I feel this way because pretty much all the (few) massages I've received over the last eight years or so have been from women who broadly fit this profile, and they've all been pretty much awesomely relaxing.
