It currently costs Netflix up to $1 per DVD mailed round trip while a typical streamed movie costs 5 cents. With 2 million DVDs per day being shipped, Netflix is spending $700M per year in physical disk postage and that number continues to decline as Netflix adds more streaming content.

I guess the netflix schism was an eventuality, anyway. My guess is they want to open up the possiblity of selling off the physical distribution arm to a third party, like maybe redbox.

DVDs all but have niche uses going forward. Although I was very surprised to see the lines at the Redbox in Brigantine. But my theory is that they were probably a lot of vacationers who didn't have their gear and/or high speed internet connections in their temporary abode, so they are a temporary part of the 'niche' market for physical DVDs. Even that niche market will eventually dissolve, I suppose, as portable web access becomes more affordable and efficient, and store-and-play devices become better. Does netflix offer any store-and-play options now, or is it just streaming??

It would seem Netflix would accomplish much the same thing as a price increase if they simply made more movies available for streaming. I actually haven't checked in the last month or so, but there's a bunch of stuff in my queue that's not available for streaming. And I don't think redbox is really an option for netflix people--I like netflix in part because I can get movies no bricks and mortar video store ever had. The only advantage a local video store has over netflix is the um restricted section. I wish netflix would get one of those.

i wonder if there's a licensing impediment that prevents currently prevents netflix from offering more streaming. If so, I would expect that to be more and more marginalized as time goes on.

yeah, netflix kind of gets bitch choice on what goes to stream. They get what the studios give them, and there are even restrictions like if it's airing on HBO it can't be on netflix streaming. So if HBO starts airing Weekend at Bernies, Netflix can't show it.

Booked a trip to Myrtle Beach for the first week in October. Staying at some place on the beach that was reasonable, has indoor pools, etc. Gotta find a good spot to watch the playoffs while down there, anyone ever been? Any Recommendations?

I feel like my apartments internet being on a powerline connection is going to cause me great frustration. It works fine, then all of a sudden watching videos is impossible. Can't really complain either since the landlord has the internet built into the price, so getting my own connection isn't an option.
