On-line Algonquin Round Table (AKA Random Thoughts)

Bill McNeal wrote:No idea. The girl my friend was with before this was great. She was a minister, and my friend is fairly anti-religion, but they got along great, both of them were really happy. She was really just a great girl, we all loved hanging out with them, but then he broke up with her for the girl he's marrying. He'd been chasing her for like years, and then she would just hook up with, date, and screw his friends, but he was alway hung up on her. Then she got really fat and no one else wanted her and then she came to him, while he was dating the minister and boom, that was it. She told me the story at the engagement party like it was funny. I hadn't seen her in so long I didn't recognize her she had gotten so fat.

Bill McNeal wrote:Thanks guys. I was actually suprised he even asked me to be in his wedding, I don't like his wife-to-be and he knows it and she knows it. My wife absolutely hates her, so this wedding is pretty much the end of the friendship anyway. We used to be real good friends, but since he's gotten with this chick we haven't hung out really at all. I hadn't seen him in two years when he asked me to be in the wedding. I was going along with it to see if maybe things changed and his wife to be was less of a #$&! and maybe we could be friends again, but it appears she's still a #$&! and has now made him one as well.

As for drinking vast amounts of booze, the rehersal dinner is at his mom's house and the wedding/reception is at a fairly ghetto joint, so I wouldn't be suprised if it was a cash bar. The food choices on the invite were hot dogs or pizza.

It should NOT be a tuxedo wearing event, in that case.

I see complacency or inertia in a few cases. But I've also seen things like Bill described. There's a huge difference between a shitty girlfriend (I mean, we've all had those, right?) and a shitty wife.

There's an old Ben Vaughn song--She's Your Problem Now. We've all lived this, right?

people fall into the idea that they have to do the life cycle that everyone else does (school, job, girl, marriage, kids) and they get complacent in that. i know several younger guys at work who are practically having mid life crisis because their life plan isn't what they planned. so they latch onto the first thing that comes their way hell or high tide. its unfortunate.

Ya know, some people are happy married. I mean, look, I resisted the urge to quote Andy from Shawshank yesterday with respect to Housh/Barry talking about their pickiness. "What I mean is, you don't seem to be a very good thief, maybe you should try something else."

Yes there's no reason to think something is wrong if you're 30 and unmarried but there's no reason to think everything's fine if you are as well.

Just stating the obvious but there's a middle ground between settling for someone bad and being overly picky.

barry, plan something with your friends on here instead of via e-mail. That'll be great fun.

Talk to Jamie, he's the one who mentioned it. In fact Calvin invited you

I was in my best friend's wedding two months ago. He's been in a great relationship for years and I have nothing but optimism for him. Same goes for another friend getting married this fall. I also have friends with crappy girlfriends. I've had bad relationships, bad dates, great dates. I'm well aware of what I want. You didn't resist quoting anything; in fact, you did it in the most dickish way possible. You often give harsh but wise advice, but this was an instance of being harsh just for the hell of it. I don't have any problem with you, so if you have one with me leave it to PMs.

Ok, Barry, I overreacted to a perceived justification for singlehood by "all the miserable married guys".

Actually, I don't think "overly picky" or whatever is the issue, at least for me. And if someone wants to extend their adolescence into their thirties, I don't see how that's a problem.

It's a question of sufficient data. And all I was suggesting that one date is often insufficient data. At least under some circumstance (nice looking, date went well) it seems worth a second look. Jeff rudely, but I think correctly suggested that some people don't have great relationship instincts and that maybe they should consider adjusting their relationship strategy.

Man, I have nothing against getting married at my age or earlier, and if I found myself ready for it I'd go for it. That's not going to happen to me for at least a few years, though. I don't mind being single but I'm the monogamous type in general. I can count on one hand the girls I've really liked since my last girlfriend. But I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Just bad BABIP luck.
