i dont really understand this. they had to plead guilty yet get set free. its like the courts knew they screwed up but didnt feel like looking to see who the real killer might be.

They wanted to go free -- especially Damien, who was on death row -- and also prove their innocence. This accomplishes the first half, and they can pursue the other half from the outside.

I think the state knew they couldn't uphold the verdict but wanted to save face.
