SK, I agree with your sentiment of "fuck them, it was their mistake" but they can and will come after you for their mistake. My stepdad had the same thing happen to him.

The article pretty clearly lays out the different ways a company will get their money back from an employer. The $2.6 million mistake was just meant to highlight the prosecution's argument (if you know who accidentally gave you the money, you can be expected to return it to them). But the argument goes on to show how they can take it back anytime they want
