Post-Politicapocalyptic Random Thoughts

Did I mention I love single transferable vote? I love single transferable vote. Single transferable vote fucking rules.

Although 166 TDs for a country with fewer people than the population of greater Manchester could perhaps give you some clue to the problems endemic in the political culture here.

Yeah so, I'm in a good mood.

1.) Went to Osteria last night. Pizzas - phenomenal. Pasta - outstanding. Main course - disappointing. Scotch selection - superb. Solid B+

2.) I went to Harrah's Chester today with my dad. I was there for less than 2 hours. I won $5700. Playing $50 tables. Bought in with $1500. I'm a pretty proficient counter, so I keep my base bet around $125 and drop down/up as appropriate. Ran into some really good counts in two consecutive shoes, bet big, won. Going into my last shoe before I had to leave I had $4600. Turned my blacks into pumpkins, pocketed them, and figured I'd play the last shoe with $600. Lose it, no big deal. Still up $2500. Coming down to the last quarter of the shoe, I have $200 left of the $600 (I'm not counting at this point). The following sequence occurs:

a.) Bet $200 I have left win hand - forget details ($400)
b.) $200 bet, DD 11 v. 6, get 21, win $400 ($800)
c.) $400 bet - Blackjack, win $600 ($1400)
d.) $600 bet - 18 against 10; dealer turns 7 (miracle); win $600 ($2000)
e.) $300 bet - Ace/7 against 4, DD, pull a 3 for 21 win $600 ($2600)
f.) Yellow card comes out, I leave

3.) I'm going to Scottsdale on Weds. morning for 5 days of golf with 15 other dudes.

So, yeah.

voters rank candidates in order of preference. Quota is determined by total votes and number of seats. If a candidate exceeds quota and is elected, their surplus votes are redistributed and counting proceeds again. If no one exceeds quota, candidate with fewest votes is excluded and their votes redistributed.

the concept of quota sounds important here, but needs clarification. Among other questions: am I in - and only in - if my votes "exceed quota"?

Good point on DD. I felt like I had to tell someone (someone I'm not married to). And I'm usually pretty ornery.

When you cut the cards in blackjack shoe (6-8 decks in a shoe), they place the yellow cut card about 1/4 from the end of the shoe. When the yellow card comes out, the shoe is over and they reshuffle. It's one of the many ways they try to crack down on counting. For obvious reasons, the count becomes more meaningful the closer you get to the end of the deck.

No. See final count in Brian Lenihan's constituency tonight. On the first count, Joan Burton gets in. Second count redistributes all her votes. It's the last gasp for the bottom 3 candidates, but if they get second preference from her surplus votes, then perhaps they hang in a bit longer and get sufficient votes to get back their deposit (about 500 euros). third count they're gone, and some of their votes (pretty small amount) redistributed to the remaining candidates. In the end, Brian Lenihan (former minister for finance) makes it in by virtue of having more votes then everyone of the remaining candidates, even though he doesn't make quota.

ah, STV. the day ends, we've only had 1/3 of the seats decided. To paraphrase the great man, results come dropping slow.

the irish electorate has pleasantly surprised me. It's a far more varied dail then I could have hoped for, with a respectable number of independents and smaller parties. It's a starting point for the serious political reform that is required if we're ever to become a decent and fair country.

I wonder if it is related to the politics thread disappearance. Maybe Vox forgot to check to see if pacino was still in there before he nuked it.

pacino posted on the mod board on Monday.

So he's not trapped inside a thread?

Behold the beard of a new Teachta Dála.

Image

A country that can vote for a beard like that should hold its head high amongst the family of nations.

In other news, one of the first people to vote in this election voted on his way to the airport, because he was emigrating. Didn't stop him from putting the boot in.

ah, the noisome stench of fury in the morning. I love it.

Hard to say. You're a natural fit for the Progressive Democrats in terms of your economic outlook, but you're a pragmatist and very much into the workings of a political machine, which puts you more in the fianna fail camp. Fianna Fail also have the tradition - Fine Gael were a hybrid party which came about in the 30s and didn't sniff power until the coalition government of the late 40s.

Yeah, you're probably a fianna failer. go read about charlie haughey and sean lemass.
