I love State Patty's Day. Moreso in theory than in practice.

Part of it stems from the fact that I hate St. Patrick's Day for what it's become. It's my family's damned traditional holiday, and I hate that it's this mainstream drinking holiday for everyone from everywhere. No, not everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day. It's just the day everyone wishes they were. So that kind of takes away from it for me.

State Patty's Day took that away. It gave students a legitimate drinking holiday. And it's not like people take it easy on St. Patrick's Day as a result, but that's what the damage control should have been: Drive drinking activities toward a controlled drinking holiday and away from St. Patrick's Day. That way, you have one highly regulated drinking day instead of two wags of the finger from Bill Mahon et al.

I'm not saying it'd work but nothing they've done has worked anyway and it was never going to, despite the borough's apparent conclusion that cracking down on bars would keep people from getting hammered in the Valley all day long anyway.

Plus, as shameful as some make it out to be, Penn State has always been a drinking and party school, and making up a drinking holiday out of proclaimed necessity (because we'd be damned if spring break was gonna take away our St. Patrick's Day) is about the most mobile the student body ever got while I was there. Its ridiculous and not necessarily anything to be proud of, but it's representative of Penn State's culture and kind of endearing in that sense.

Cinco de State is trite bull shit, though.

My issue with State Patty's Day is that "Saturday" is a legitimate drinking holiday at PSU anyway, and doesn't require the interference of invaders to certify it as such

Now, bars are closing all over the place, completely destroying a fine and normal Saturday

Yeah, I sympathize with your POV but I think if Penn State had done more (which is to say, more than nothing at all) to control it rather than dropping the responsibility on the borough and the students themselves, we wouldn have this mess on our hands.

My favorite part of the short history of the holiday was when the dude who invented it basically washed his hands of the whole thing a couple months before he was set to graduate. It's pure speculation but I'd bet a large sum of money he made some helpless pleas to the Collegian to get those original news stories taken off the website.

I'm a little confused, a "drinking holiday" is a day when people are encouraged not to drink?

The first year it was a shit show, the bars played it up at least implicitly, and the police were pretty unprepared. Now because of pressure from the borough a bunch of the bars close for the day. It's stupid. People are still getting wasted, but now they're doing it in apartments and houses where it's presumably less safe anyway.

I wonder if it is related to the politics thread disappearance. Maybe Vox forgot to check to see if pacino was still in there before he nuked it.
