I think the negative reaction is because assumptions are made due to laziness rather than a lack of good information or the time to pursue the correct answer. Even without sufficient information you can hypothesize. Under these conditions of imperfect information, to say that you assumed something is akin to waiving a white flag rather than putting in the effort to deduce a likely solution.
