Posters who remind me of ballplayers

Posters who remind me of ballplayers

I don't know if this will work or not. But here goes. Calvinballs was first:

When trying to work out my BSG HOF I tried to assign ball players to posters to see where they fell. And Calvinball was Joe PEP. A famous and decent player but not a HOF talent.

Pepitone played on some great Yankee teams and had a pretty good career. Some thought he didn't get the most out of his talent. Some of his team mates thought he was a bit odd. But he was mostly a popular guy. One time he stole an elevator.

He went to Japan for a short time but it didn't work out:

According to an edition of Total Baseball, Pepitone spent his days in Japan skipping games for claimed injuries only to be at night in discos, behavior which led the Japanese to adopt his name into their vernacular--as a word meaning "goof off".

I also think he didn't shovel snow while there which is a big faux paus in Japan I believe.

Peace Joe Pep. You never meant anyone any harm.

Here's Moz:

Jim Palmer. Great pitcher. Complained sometimes and sometimes saw the worst in everything. Had a crazy relationship with his manager but both were best off because of it. Good HOF candidate but not in first year of a Willie Mays Hall.

Palmer is intelligent and articulate which led him to a post playing career broadcasting gig.

you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

PTK:

Bill "Spaceman" Lee. A pretty good lefty pitcher for a lot of years. Was very unusual both on and off the mound. He was misunderstood and had problems with the "establishment" in baseball but he became a demi-legend. Very popular amongst the non-mainstream folks.

Lee is known for his adherence to counterculture behavior, his antics both on and off the field, and his use of the Leephus pitch, a personalized variation of the eephus pitch.[1]

His outspoken manner and outrageous comments were frequently recorded in the press, much to the horror of his parents. He spoke in defense of Maoist China, population control, Greenpeace, and school busing in Boston, among other things. He berated an umpire for a controversial call in the 1975 World Series, threatening to bite off his ear and encouraging the American people to write letters demanding the game be replayed. He claimed his marijuana use made him impervious to bus fumes while jogging to work at Fenway Park.

I remember his quote when he wanted to bite the guy's ear off, He said: "I should have Van Gough'ed him."

Was also known as a ladies man and some say he invented the "Blink on the Tip" technique.

Here's the Ballad of Bill Lee by Warron Zevon:

"You're supposed to sit on your ass
And nod at stupid things
Man, that's hard to do.
And if you don't, they'll screw you.
And if you do they'll screw you too.

When I'm standing in the middle of the diamond all alone
I always play to win when it comes to skin and bone

But sometimes I say things I shouldn't....
Sometimes I say things I shouldn't."

That's PTK folks.

Joe Table is Sandy Koufax:

A bit late to the party but had a very high peak -- many considered him the best pitcher of his era and some even call him the greatest pitcher ever. This is controversial as there are younger folks who understand he was really good, don't believe in the greatest pitcher ever stuff. His career just wasn't long enough.

how he rates as a HOFer depends a lot on how you rate career accomplishments vs. peak value.

Koufax is a very private person. Not many know him well. Those that do appreciate his humor though.

One fact I was able to dig up regarding Koufax's personal life is he really dislikes J. C. Romero.

I decided on Chuck Klein. A very good player who put up some hellacious numbers. Won some batting titles and even a Triple Crown. Some believe he wouldn't have been nearly as good had he not played so many games in the Baker Bowl. But lots of guys played there and none of them put up numbers like Chuck.

He was known to drink a bit.

Trent Steele.

Frank Robinson. Very hard-nosed ballplayer who never suffered fools gladly. Had a good sense of humor and was a good leader as evidenced by him being in charge of the Kangaroo Court while an Oriole -- he certainly had an interest in the law.

He won an MVP with the Reds but he suddenly changed jobs in mid-career as he was shipped off to Baltimore. He won another MVP and led another team to a World Series.

Very solid credentials.

For some reason, he really dislikes J. C. Romero.

There really needs to be discussion on the criteria that is being used to link posters to players.
