No worries. This is fun. Besides you are at least a Woody Held. (His philosophy at the plate was: "Don't forget to swing hard in case you hit the ball.").

Wizlah is:

Roger Bresnahan, the "Duke of Tralee." Most known as a catcher, he also was versatile enough to play every position on the field. He was fast and agile, un usual for a catcher. And he actually debuted as a pitcher in MLB.

It's hard to find a description of Bresnahan that doesn't include the word "fiery." He cursed like a pro and his verbal skills were quite noteworthy. If he liked you though he was a great pal.

The Duke invented the shin guard for catchers which helped catchers as they began to play in more and more games at the position (in the olden days catchers would max out at around 100-110 games). He also invented the padded catcher's mask and also tooled around wqith a leather batting helmet after suffering a bad beanning.

A Hall of Famer and one of the early heroes of pro baseball.

Monkeyboy is:

Duke Snider.

Sticking with the Duke theme. Snider is kinda forgotten as he was a CFer in NYC at the same time as Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle (and Whitey in Philly of course). But during the 50s, Snider was mentioned in the same breath as Mays and Mantle and Brooklynites would have contended that their Duke was the best CFer in baseball.

He had some awesome years in the mid-50s and he hit more homers in that decade than anyone. Some downgrade his achievements because he played his home games in friendly Ebbets Field but his road OPS is .880 and I'll take that from a CFer any day.

He was a 5-tool guy. A fine CFer with a good arm. Hit for average and power with plenty of walks.

Interesting how Duke finished his career:

April 14, 1964: Traded to Zurich (IL) by the New York Mets for modular furniture to be named later

Doc Smooth is:

Willie McCovey.

Stretch was a great player for a long time. But mostly, he was the coolest player I can think of from my youth. A huge guy, he hit with great power but was a smooth all around player.

During a pitcher's era, McCovey had his best seasons in the late 60s leading the league in OPS + from 1968-70. He won a Rookie of the Year and an MVP award during his 22 year career.

If there is a baseball player you could draw some parallels to Jesus with, I'd probably be him.

You're Honus Wagner.

I mentioned it in the H of Fame discussion thread or somewhere.

Has all the tools, a big hitting middle infielder when his contemporaries were glove men. An old timer who plays the modern game. One of the absolute all time greats, an original Hall of Famer. Although an old time player, his skills were way ahead of his time. He hit for power and got on base and was an exceptional fielder.

A class act as well as a great player. He didn't smoke, unusual for the time. His objection to smokes led to a halt to the production of his baseball card, which led to very few being made and the value of them to reach ungodly proportions. (The card was made by a tobacco company).

He was noted for his fitness. A class act all the way.

Grand slams. You forgot the part about all the grand slams.

fascinating parallels:
I did patrol 1B in my era of play, and was thisclose to having a body of fluid named after me.

McCovey, nice - I had visions of Jimmy Piersall
