both of our cars are paid for now, but hers is over 10 years old. she never uses it, as she has basically become a stay-at-home mom (she's on sabbatical, and we don't know if she's going back next year). mine is a 2004, and it has over 160,000 miles on it.

she's getting half her salary this year, but with my car now paid off we actually have more money coming in each week than last year. it's a good position to be in right now, but things could change in an instant.
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

Jeez, Woody, you've shaken my confidence that all I need to do is make post longer than three sentences to make sure it's ignored. Some words do just jump out at you, though.

Don't worry, I read your post. But I'm not touching this argument with a ten-foot-pole (haha, wrestling boner)

Keep banking the payment you were making into a special savings account -- your new car fund.

Make sure you drive her car once in a while to keep it in good running condition....

I'm paying my car off in about 2 and half payments, a few months early, then we are essentially going to do that, first by doubling up payments on our other car then by the end of the year we'll have hers paid off and we'll be banking close to a grand a month. I can't wait. I'm in essentially the same situation as 1, my car is a 2005 with about 150k miles on it, so we'll probably need to replace it fairly soon, but the other car is a 2006 with about 40k miles on it, which is awesome.

So is there anything wrong with either car? You don't sound like a car-head who needs the latest and greatest, so I agree with Woody- keep 'em running until the value prop of a repair is way out of whack.

My favorite mom car with one kid was our Scion Xa. VoxJr went in the middle seat, so safe as can be in a small car. The hatch was big enough for groceries and a stroller. And great gas mileage, considering we were round-tripping to Wilmington from Cherry Hill at least twice a week, sometimes three.

You don't NEED to move up to a bigger car until you start needing to move more people around in one car.

Vox's car has average 10K/year, because it was the parent car for about five years, and it's 9.5 years old now.

I second this. We went out and bought our van-like-thing (Mazda5) only when expecting our second. The car we replaced was a 1997 and very long in the tooth but we probably could have squeezed another year out of it had we not needed the space.

A buddy of mine who's an audio engineer is working with Ted Williams today, that homeless guy with the great voice. He's doing the voiceover for a national TV campaign. Says he's legitimately good.

I'd like to downsize to a Mazda 5, but with carpooling 4-6 kids, it's not feasible.

Did he make it to NYC? I thought he was grounded in OH because he had no license.

You can tell from the spots that he's legitimately good; it's the sane part I hope is also good.

Let me correct that; you can tell he's got a really good voice. But there's a lot more to VO than just the voice. You can tell he's got good timing and inflections and a good sense of talking rythmns; but being good ALSO means remembering your lines and doing everything right on the first take (or at least the second). Maybe he's good at that stuff too and that's why your engineer buddy rightfully called it out.

if feasible, you should put aside the same payment each month to keep in reserve for either car repairs or to save up a good down payment for the next car

-Apt #1 is a in the marina area, one block from the palace of fine arts and one from the bay. 1350 a month. nice place, definitely worth the money. amazing neighborhood, but pretentious.

-Apt #2 is in inner sunset area which is more low key, but one block south of golden gate park. small place, very nice landlord. already identified my go to bar in the area and ingratiated myself to the bartender. twice the distance to work, but about the same travel time. when i told the land lady that i liked the neighborhood she replied, "you must not be from around here." that has, so i'm told, nothing to do with crime but the fact that it isn't a trendy place. 850 a month. smaller place.

Leaning towards #1. I can afford either, but it'd be nice to have that extra 500 in the pocket every month. Possibility of seeing Pat #5 is high in locale number one. Lady friend is a fan of number one. I'd feel more responsible taking number 2. I'm having trouble trying to quantify happiness. Anyone have a formula for that?

What are the cross streets for each? I used to live in the outer sunset. The sunset is umm...very ethnic. If you're close to the UCSF area, there's a few things there, some stuff. Lots of good Chinese food.

The N train is very slow if you have to commute, but you're close enough to the tunnel so it wouldn't be so slow. It might be packed by then though.

Personally, I love the Marina area, but I'm probably more of the pretentious type who would. The Marina Safeway is a notorious pick-up place, FWIW.

Feel free to PM if you have any other SF questions that someone who hasn't lived there in 8 years can answer for you.

Yep, he's there now. My buddy says he's taking direction well, giving different reads, and super nice. There are cameras and PR people there covering it.
