well, you know what you have to do; go back.

I mean, I think you know as well as we all do that, considering the information in your thumbnail, the odds are plenty good the guy at least knows PtK, if he isn't himself the Kid.

Call him up, tell him you're in town just a day or so more, ask if he can recommend a decent SF jazz club. If he says "Yoshi's" without hesitation, you've got y(our) man

I was really close to asking about jazz clubs. When he told me he was from Philly I kind of gave him the Larry David "truth" stare to see if he'd crack. I told him how big of a Phillies fan I was and how much I was looking forward to seeing them play out here. He told me about how he and his friend took trips up and down the west coast to see the Phils. I didn't think that fit the PTK profile so I pulled back a bit, but really I was just stunned that I had a suspect within arms reach.

I can't rule out the possibility that I would have tackled him if he would have identified himself as the kid. I don't hunt, but I would have acted as if he were a 12 point buck that I just bagged.

And I'll throw this up there for opinion:

-Apt #1 is a in the marina area, one block from the palace of fine arts and one from the bay. 1350 a month. nice place, definitely worth the money. amazing neighborhood, but pretentious.

-Apt #2 is in inner sunset area which is more low key, but one block south of golden gate park. small place, very nice landlord. already identified my go to bar in the area and ingratiated myself to the bartender. twice the distance to work, but about the same travel time. when i told the land lady that i liked the neighborhood she replied, "you must not be from around here." that has, so i'm told, nothing to do with crime but the fact that it isn't a trendy place. 850 a month. smaller place.

Leaning towards #1. I can afford either, but it'd be nice to have that extra 500 in the pocket every month. Possibility of seeing Pat #5 is high in locale number one. Lady friend is a fan of number one. I'd feel more responsible taking number 2. I'm having trouble trying to quantify happiness. Anyone have a formula for that?

before you said you were leaning toward #1, i figured you were leaning #2 from the way you were talking about it. but a pretentious neighborhood doesn't mean you have to take that crap. you make it what you want it to be. if you have a lady friend, you might want to stay away from The Bat anyway.

one of the main reasons i'm leaning towards #1 is that it's a rent controlled apartment. i'd feel much more responsible taking #2 right now and wouldn't regret it for the year i'd be there, but i have this awful feeling that passing on a rent controlled place in that area is going to make me hate myself a year or two from now.

i can pull #1 now, but wow, 500 extra a month would be nice. it's really more of a long term decision to take it now because the more responsible option, i hate to say, is probably taking the cheaper place.

I mean, if it were me, I'm taking #2 big time. But I don't really know how rent control works. I see an extra 500 in my pocket now and I'm taking it. How long you going to be out there? How much is the rent gonna go up in a place where you like the neighborhood more than the landlord does?

Night 1 in Vegas: Trudging 3/4 mile each way to a liquor store on the strip (appropriately called Strip Liquors), handing out multiple quarters to homeless along my ill-conceived shortcut that involved scaling a concrete wall and barbwire fence, having a couple drinks in my room in an effort to fall asleep. Working the morning shift at CES tomorrow, then hopefully finding FUNNER things to do in the evening.

Hoping to be out here long term.

As for rent control, and I only had a vague idea of this until about a day ago in terms of how it works here, in San Francisco it limits the rate at which a landlord can raise the rent from lease to lease. When someone gives it up, I believe, they can raise it as much as they want, but with the same renter they can only raise it up to 7% annually. This is, apparently, a huge deal.

I was in a line of 20 some people to view the marina apartment. It was like walking through a wake. Fortunately and incidentally, I had my pre-wake prep of alcohol.

Am i getting a verizon iphone anytime soon? And how are the step children treating you after a barbed wire fence jump? I always had trouble accounting for the ball drop on my evasive manuevering tactics.

you're quite close to resolving the economic element of your equation. Now just find some info on the typical annual rent increase in SF apts, plug in the length of time you think you might be there, and do some comparative present value calcs of the rent discrepancies. Obviously, if your non-rent-controlled option's cost may spurt up sharply year-over-year at some point your rent trajectories will cross paths, blunting the value of your $500 monthly savings. My guess is you'd have to be there a long time before the advantage would be zeroed out.

Better mathematicians/PV estimators than I can probably tell you what the rent increase rate would have to be to wipe out the delta within whatever forecast residency periods you set up.

By all means, and by any means necessary, ferret out lady friend's feelings about the situation. and probe for details.

Sometimes this stuff makes sense. I mean, you were 16 once, right?

i was a nice young man. there are many nice young men.

anyway, she's been wrestling with no problems up to the age of 11, not sure what'll change in 7th grade other than she's now wrestling for her school. plus, they're going to 'accommodate' her otherwise with practice time, so why not just allow her to be a part of the team, as her coach tried to do? she's going to be wrestling boys no matter what, may as well let her do it on the team. seems arbitrary.

i never understood why guys couldnt play field hockey, either

No. Absolutely not. Speaking as a father of a girl who wrestled in middle school and of a boy who currently wrestles on his high school team.

The best possible solution, of course, would be to give the girls the opportunity to wrestle on girls teams, but throughout large parts of the country this is simply not possible at this time. Some places it is-I took my daughter to an invitational in north Jersey and it was something to see the hundreds of girls who turned out, most currently wrestling for clubs and schools in the area. But in the south Jersey area the only option was to join boys teams, a surprising number of which had one or two girls, all of whom wrestled without incident.

Should we also ban homosexual guys from wrestling, since, y'know, they might get excited? It's a sport, it has rules, and this situation has been handled thousands of times without any problem. The people who have a problem with it aren't familiar enough with it and let their imaginations get the best of them. As for the "boys will be traumatized by losing to girls" argument, competition between sexes is going to take place throughout life and the sooner kids learn to deal with it the better. Wrestling's a tough sport-it's always just you out there alone against your opponent. But if you're fixated on who that opponent is, you're halfway to losing the match. Learning to do your best whatever the circumstances is one of the great lessons of the sport.

OTOH, I haven't actually read the article, so there may be external circumstances I haven't considered. I reserve the right to withdraw any of my opinions in this particular case based on any inconvenient facts.

Jeez, Woody, you've shaken my confidence that all I need to do is make post longer than three sentences to make sure it's ignored. Some words do just jump out at you, though.
