Unlike typical teenagers, they can afford to buy some decent equipment, and they're self-indulgent enough to blow their money on those toys. Fine. They're busy, so they don't practice much. OK. But instead of just jamming harmlessly once in awhile for fun, they actually get a gig. And they say yes. That's the part I simply don't get.

Let this be a lesson to all those here contemplating taking up a musical instrument... you will not be ready to perform in public after just a month of lessons/practice. It'll take at least TWO months.

Other lessons: Singing is harder than it looks. If you're gonna perform in front of people, choose a more forgiving up tempo number such as Just What I Needed by The Cars. I know that song isn't hard because the band I was in in eighth grade played a passable version of it. Though we did practice more than a week, and the drummer turned out to be an excellent musician who got a music scholarship at Indiana University. And both guitarists were pretty decent as well. (The bass player and the keyboard player (me) were not good.)

Kevin Arnold's band -- The Electric Shoes -- did the right thing...just play loud.

I love how when you get to the end of that video, one of the five 'Next Up' suggestions is Rusted Root
