Kenhorst Borough Council again yielded to pressure and contributed $2,700 to the Gov. Mifflin area Library ("Kenhorst residents demand contribution to library," Reading Eagle, Nov. 5).
Approximately 18 people spoke favorably about the wonderful job the library was doing for area residents. About half the supporters were residents of the borough; the remainder were employees or volunteers.
The $2,700 was based on $1 per resident, and the state will match that amount. However only 20 percent of the families in the borough use the library. Doesn't that mean we have taken care of the minority?
Our small borough has very little room for expansion, so our income is limited. We must pay our employees, electric, fuel and many other expenses, which are mandatory.
Historically the borough has donated $600 to the Animal Rescue League, $300 to the Berks Visiting Nurse Association and $200 to Crime Alert Berks County. But the library needs $2,700.
I don't mind when someone asks for a donation, but I do mind when he tells me how much I must give. That is not a donation; that is a fee.
If residents who use the library would pay a fee of $10 per family per year, the other 80 percent of the residents would not have to subsidize the operation.
I have nothing against the library, but I do not appreciate having to pay for something I do not use.
