I'm kind of thinking there's a huge selection bias operating there--unhappy people don't make it into their golden years.

That is, the causal arrow isn't age leads to happiness, it's the other way--happiness leads to getting old.

The other thing I've observed is that the people I know who are healthy and in their 70s and 80s stay very active and connected, which also tends to make people happy.

While the study in question is indeed a snapshot, the surprisingly ample body of research in this aspect of happiness suggests otherwise.

In short, despite the evidence of outliers like your present correspondent to the contrary, even a miserable SOB like hoya is likely to age, and mellow accordingly.

Paul since I know you don't read the Sixers thread, is the Luke Babbitt fellow in the NBA draft from Nevada related to you? If so will he buy you a better car after he gets drafted? Thanks in advance.

I have a stafford loan for college.

Obama apparently froze that program at some point, but they never notified us until I finally got around to signing up for classes today. Fucking jerkoffs.

They said I'm on a list to be mailed information once they know what is going to happen to the program.

It's kind of fucked up.

Yeah that would have been much more socialist of him instead of sodomizing me.

I wouldn't even care if they had notified me, but they didn't. Thats the fucked up part.

On Helen Thomas, she had a pretty darn good career. She made a pretty bad remark, and rightly stepped down/was pushed out. It does seem weird that people blasting her don't seem to hold the same standard for those assailing Palestinians day after day, though. An oppressed people deserve respect, not scorn.

Interesting take on the Daily Beast about how Israel is perhaps out of touch with their current situation and with US opinion.

Never talk to the police without a lawyer being present- even if you are completely innocent. I don't believe the vast majority of police try to convict innocent people but they- along with witnesses who may mistakingly identify or accuse you of something- are human and make mistakes.

Although it's against the law to lie to the police, the police have the right to lie to you. They will also intimidate, threaten, trick, and take advantage of people who don't know their rights- especially their right to refuse to be searched (4th amendment) and remain silent (5th amendment). Studies have shown that ~30% of convictions that have been overturned because of DNA evidence were crimes the criminals confessed to- usually after 7 or 8 hours of being questioned.

Ride Along With Mitch

I think I found my guy for 2012. Very long article from the Weekly Standard. I doubt many will get through it, though I encourage Vox and any of the other board conservatives to put in the time to read it.

Gotta love David Brooks.

He tackles a defense of an education in the humanities here, and labels the protagonist, the central idea, the concept at the heart of his defense: The Big Shaggy.

Has he no editor? No protective colleague? No ears on his head?

Election Day today.

Going to go out and vote for Jon Runyan in a little bit. I'm not into big plea type things, and I don't know if his race is going to be competitive or not, but if you're a Republican or undeclared voter in NJ's 3rd District who wants the GOP to have a chance at taking back the House, please spend 10 minutes today going to vote for Jon Runyan. His opponent has no chance whatsoever of beating Adler in November.

Great article. I've been a fan of his since '08, but I'd guess he has no shot to win the nomination.

I suspect very few humanities majors read Gibbon or Herodotus. Some may read the brief bit from Thucydides on Pericles.
