I know it's a far cry from being Mexican, but as an American of 100% Irish heritage that's sort of how I feel on St. Patrick's Day. And I'm also really offended by the terms "Irish car bombs" and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

I was reading the Economist special thing on Television, and it pointed out that television today is so superior to that of a couple of decades ago you might as well be talking about different genres.

Think about it--Lost>>Fantasy Island. American Idol>>Gong Show.

Even dumb shows like CSI are much better than say Quincy.

And I'm picking more or less widely popular shows from the 70s and 80s, not dogs. I mean, does anyone care to watch old episodes of LA Law, or 30 Something, or even Hill Street Blues, a show that was considered a ground breaking quality drama of its time?

Laverne and Shirley? For real? Family Ties? Get the fuck outta here.

And you can, if you like, bitch about reality shows. But they're really no worse than the various variety shows like Donny and Marie that were staples of prime time television in the 70s.

So, open a back of chips, get on the couch, and appreciate some fine American entertainment.

As morning turns to afternoon, the possibility that I want both their burritos and their booze grows.

I love husk-roasted corn, I just tend to use Old Bay as opposed to any tex mex seasonings. Although if I end up making the tequila lime chicken I'm considering, Old Bay won't quite cut it and I'll probably go with a lemon pepper on the maize.

Things that are crazy... Vox changed colleges this spring. He gets registered, the whole bit, I set up his student loan to send his info to his new school. I'm waiting, waiting, and never see the disbursement for his tuition. I call the school and they say, "Oh we don't use this type of loan, get a Stafford Loan".

So we apply for the Stafford Loan, and then the waiting begins again. Vox started classes on April 1, and the school tells me they'll give us 45 days to get the loan processed. The loan is just sitting there, our part is done, but they won't complete the process.

Vox gets an email from the school today saying that Stafford Loans aren't giving out any more money, so go get the old kind of loan....

Sounds like a typical college office. In my Junior Year, I had an accounting internship for 3 credits. I set the whole thing up using the school's career services office. About three weeks into the semester, I got a voicemail telling me I didn't have enough credits to live on campus and I had 1 week to move out. I called the housing office to explain the situation and they spoke with career services. I got a call 2 days later telling me I had to leave my dorm. Then, my mom called and took care of business talking to the housing office. Mom's get stuff done like that. No need for any lame mom jokes here.

At every university, there's a network of administrative assistants and secretaries who can resolve these situations with a few phone calls. It's a secret cabal of power--not every secretary is an initiate. But if you identify a member, and she (they're almost exclusively female in my experience) likes you, you're set.

A few weeks back I found out these 2 things on the SAME EXACT DAY.

1. After a 3 year battle with cancer, my friend's 6 year old daughter is finally cancer free. Amazing little girl and doctors and whoever else.

2. Another friend's wife comes home and tells him that they have to talk. She tells him:

A) She is no longer in love with him
B) She has been having an affair and is in love with the guy
C) She wants a divorce

They have a 4 year old and a 2 year old (both named after Phillies). He was absolutely shocked- never ever imagined something like this could happen. Out of all of my friends, he was "the good one". The only one I can call a genuinely good guy- no drugs, no violence, took care of his parents when they were sick while his sister sat on her fat ass, worked 7 days a week when his family needed extra $. Easily the nicest guy I've ever met. Dick Jerardi even mentioned him in a column because of the way he proposed to her (they sort of met at the Preakness).

He's still can't believe it. He has no details at all- how long it's been going on, who it is, why, etc... He knows the violent phase of my life ended almost 10 years ago but he still asked me to help him fuck the guy up once he finds out who it is- I admit I'm actually considering it because I feel so bad for him but I never ever imagined he would ask me to do something like that. It's so out of character. Then again I would straight up kill a mother fucker if that happened to me so I know where he's coming from- and he would suffer before he died. Believe that.

Life is fucking crazy. 1 friend finds out the best news in the world. The other one finds out the worst. Unbelievable.

Holy shit. I have court in 3 and a half hours and I'm a fucking mess. I can't imagine what I'm going to look like at 7:30- and this party just started. I hope I don't have to talk to the judge.

My grandmom would have been 74 today (5/6). She died 12/1/04. Lung cancer- by the time they found it, it had already spread to her spine. It was so painful- she suffered so much.

Everybody knew she had no chance yet her doc at the U of Penn sold her 3 rounds of chemo and turned her into a skeleton. I wonder how much they charged her insurance for that. It's so sad to know doctors have to be salesmen at the same time. And for what? Why couldn't they let her die with some dignity? What did chemo do- extend her life and excruciating pain for a few extra months? My parents had booked a trip to Florida a year prior to finding all of this out. My mom was going to cancel but the doc told her to go to relieve some stress and assured her she would be OK and that she had 4-8 months to live. As it turns outs she died 4 days later so I guess he was a little off. We had to call them on the third day and tell them to take the first flight home. As soon as my mom walked into the room, my grandmom opened her eyes looked at her, and took her last breath. It was like she was waiting for her- I know it sounds crazy but I witnessed it with my own 2 eyes. Her dogs in the their pens began howling out of nowhere for at least 10 minutes. I know it sounds crazy but I witnessed it with my own 2 ears. Some pretty crazy coincidences.

Nobody deserves to suffer like that but my grandmom was a saint and such a free spirit. What other grandmom do you know that would call her grandson at 11:00 on a Tuesday night and ask if he wanted to go to Geno's or down the shore to the casinos? That's just how she was. And if we did go to Geno's she would end up buying all of the homeless people a samich as well. She was a typical South Philly Italian with her big black Caddy and all kinds of bling. She bailed me out every time I got in trouble and she always took my side no matter what. If it was because of a fight she would say, "Well, why did he bite your hand?" and then look at me and give me a little wink. Every time I got kicked out of my house she took me in and mediated the situation. I could call her at 2:00 and tell her I could go for steak and shrimp- she would curse me out in Italian and tell me she didn't feel like going to the store. An hour later she would call me and say, "Be here by 6:00 and bring some of your friends." Every Sunday she made a big pot of gravy- the best macaroni and meatballs you ever tasted. 6 or 7 of my friends always came over to eat and watch football- that was always the recovery day for us after partying from Thursday to Saturday. She even took in 3 Vietnamese kids/young adult immigrants that had nowhere else to go and put a roof over their heads, clothed them, fed them...etc... until they could get on their feet. All of her 8 brothers and sisters and their kids always came to her house for any holiday like Memorial Day (Even though my grandmom lived in Jersey, the rest of my family still lives in South Philly- I literally have ~75 cousins in a 20 block radius). FYI People from South Philly act like they have never seen water before when you have a pool- they go buck wild. I guess you can say she was the patriarch of the family. She always helped everybody. She didn't deserve to suffer like that. I'm just glad she saw me get married and I was able to dance with her on my wedding day. I'll always have that. They didn't find the cancer until 6 months later.

Anyway I'm just rambling now. Happy Birthday even though you're dead.

I can't believe this 97 in a 65 ticket is gonna cost me >$600 between a lawyer and other fines. I guess that's better than paying surcharges and getting points, though.

Nor can I believe I have to be in a court room in 75 minutes.

I cut the shit out of my thumb today. Wish it was a cool story but all that happened is my laptop case is cracked on one side and it was about to fall- I reached for it and a broken part of the hinge sliced it like a knife. There was so much blood it looked like I cut an artery or something.
