Maybe going to bed at 10 PM Wednesday sober and 2 AM Thursday hammered is partially explanatory for the difference.

Also a lack of deadlines.

You're missing Plaxico? Tiki?

Of the two of us, you're the bigger Eli fan, and the rest of the offense is kind of fun, and could be good for a long time.

I'd like better linebackers, but there aren't many elite linebackers in today's NFL. Of course, the less said about the secondary the better.

“Why I don’t like this Giants team a whole heck of a lot”
By jerseyhoya

Let’s start at the beginning. After Week 5, the Giants were 5-0, but had played a soft schedule. It’s easy to look back now and say, “Well no wonder they fell apart. The Giants got fat on bad teams.” But we killed those bad teams. I mean annihilated them. Sure TB, KC and Oakland have 6 wins against teams that aren’t TB, KC and Oakland, but they’ve beaten GB, Cincy, the Eagles and Pittsburgh. And those games were just completely uncompetitive. Also everyone glosses over the fact that we did beat Dallas at Dallas in that stretch. Dallas is 9-2 against the rest of the league. That’s a good win. Kenny Phillips got hurt after Week 2, and that was really bad. I’ll give them that, but if a non-QB gets hurt, that really shouldn’t make or break your team.

OK, so riding high after five weeks, and aware that we haven’t necessarily been tested by the schedule, but looking like as complete a team as there is in the league. Expectations sky high. Then two persistent problems that have driven me nuts the past seven games: 4th quarter defense at home and not even being competitive on the road.

The three home games I’ll talk about are the SD, Atlanta and Dallas games. The Arizona game, whatever, we lost, and they’re probably just better than we are. Also I was drunk during the game, so the things that pissed me off about it at the time have been forgotten. San Diego, the offensive side of the ball plays for 3 up 3 late, then the defense gives up a touchdown in a minute or two to lose it. Atlanta, up 14 halfway through the 4th quarter, give up two TDs and win only because we won the coin toss in OT. Dallas, up 14 after a great punt return TD more than halfway through the 4th quarter, defense stops Dallas on 4th down on the ensuing drive, and still somehow we’re needing to recover an onside kick with a minute left in order to prevent the defense from inevitably giving up another late TD to send a game into overtime.

Our secondary is a sieve late in the game, in large part because our front four can’t generate pressure on its own, and Sheridan hasn’t been able or willing to risk bringing people to make up for that. So we sit there and give up tons of underneath shit while rushing four, and teams have marched down the field on us every time we’ve had a lead in the fourth quarter. I guess I’m getting a little worked up over a set of games we’re 2-1 in, but it should be 3-0, and by all rights it could easily be 1-2 or 0-3.

Then the road games. I mean jesus christ. Sure NO, Philly and Denver are all good teams. They’re a combined 28-8. No shame in losing to any or all of them I guess. But ffs, we’ve lost the three games by a combined 114-50. None of the games have been competitive in the second half. The offense has handcuffed the defense with bad turnovers and three and outs, and the defense has looked bad in every way imaginable: allowing big plays, awful on third down, bad in the red zone.

This is a team that two years ago won the Super Bowl because they were road warriors. They didn’t care who they were playing or where the game was taking place. This year they’ve been completely outclassed their last three road trips. That effort on Thanksgiving was one of the most embarrassing losses the Giants have had in years.

I don’t know how much is personnel and how much is coaching. Considering how much better the defense was last year under Spagnuolo with similar personnel, I’m inclined to blame Sheridan for a lot of the defensive woes. I’ve never been a fan of Gilbride, but the thing that is killing us the most this year offensively has been the regression of the offensive line I think. Eli hasn’t been healthy, and that’s part of it. Maybe Jacobs is running a little fat and happy after his extension. There are bright spots obviously, most notably the young receiving corps.

God I don’t know how I typed all that without ripping Feagles and Tynes. It’s not Feagles’ fault that he’s 73 years old, but his leg sucks right now, and watching games with teams who have punters who bomb kicks is really depressing. Tynes has missed a number of close field goals this year. It could be argued he cost us the San Diego game, and almost cost us the Atlanta game. I really hate our kicking situation.

Now, Sunday we’ve got a big game. And honestly even if we lose, I think there’s a reasonable chance the team can win out. The fact that the Giants were able to win a Super Bowl two years ago with a seriously flawed team is reason enough not to give up on them or anything, even at 7-6. But man this team frustrates the hell out of me.

Dallas is only 8-2 against the rest of the league. I regret my error.
