I think maybe your New York hipster is all pretend poor while your Philly hipster is like, 50% pretend poor/50% actually poor.

That's the nail on the head. It's a really frustrating phenomenon, where it's become cool to act cheap, so now that cheap is in, it's not cheap anymore. As long as I can get some kind of beer for 3 bucks, I'm happy though.

For the record, I'm enormously jealous of Philly. The bars there seem a lot more real, where people go to have a beer, watch sports and hang out. Most bars in NYC are places to be seen and listen to shitty music played at maximum volume.

***PAGING DR. JEFF DR. STEEL DR. JEFF***

We had a surprise 75th birthday party for my mom this past weekend. About 50 people, mostly (if not all) relatives. I was surprised to learn that she scored like 900 bucks in cash gifts.

Now, other than a wedding, I would never ever think to give someone over the age of 25 (i.e. somebody out of school) cash. I'd either buy something or, failing that, give a gift card.

Am I that out of touch or are my sensibilities that skewed? Or do people probably think I'm cheap at events like this ???

I went to a colleague's 50th--brought a bottle of Maker's Mark.

Having spent a couple of minutes with the word Hipster in google, I now know that the one common denominator for all classes and sub-classes of hipster is PBR.

I've spotted this in Little Rock of all places--a joint with some great beers on tap, and these young folks were drinking PBR. Why? There was no one there to impress--just us middle aged rubes from the sticks who would never be able to catch the irony of PBR.

Around here it's like $1 or $1.50 a can, so i really think that's the main reason. it really is cheap as hell. i used to drink it when i was unemployed

i don't know what the occasion is that i drink PBR. usually when i'm planning on drinking for an extended period of time and i want a whole case of beer and i'm not catering to anyone else's taste. or when i'm too lazy to read the good beer menu/too broke to get drunk off it.

oh, and the Citywide Special is PBR and Jim Beam. not my fault some hipster invented it.

Sugar Mom's in Old City has dollar PBR pounders on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 7-11. It is rather hipster, but it's a good place to go to get mangled for cheap.

There's an 11 page thread on the fugees that started this evening where one of their regular posters is threatening to kill himself. I'm on page four. I can't wait to see where this goes.

It was everything I thought it would be and more...

Dude said he was going to kill himself, but created a new sn, and when they did an IP search bc someone wanted to alert the cops, they realized the newest user at the site was from the same IP address as the guy who was going to kill himself.

TRT should have done this when changing his screen name.
