Unassisted Random Thoughts

The getting plastered without trouble thing doesn't separate the Ray's from the Irish Pubs of the world, but it does separate the Ray's from the Vangos and Village Whiskeys and Continentals and so forth.

I'd say attention to decor (or lack thereof) is a marker of a serious dive bar.

I saw a live cicada for the first time just a few years ago, and they're pretty freaky bugs themselves.

I know they have those weird patterns with rising from the ground only 1 or 2 times a decade, but I don't think I've seen those brown shells they leave behind since I was in elementary school...

1. It's (relatively) cheap.
2. No one will give you trouble if you start getting plastered as long as you don't act like an asshat.
3. And there is no Dress Code, meaning you can go after work in your shirt and tie or you can go on a Saturday night in jeans and a white tee and no one will think twice.

Dive bar? Heck, back in my day of wine and wimmins, that would constitute a class establishment. I've been to places where you'd need to shower when you got home. Did I say shower? More like requiring one of those HAZMAT washdowns.

I may have seen that cicada wasp thing on my deck Sunday night. I didn't think much of it, now I'm glad I went inside.

I've been a bit at odds with the bar scene because I generally prefer divey places and there are more swanky joints than you can shake a stick at.

Bonner's, my friend, Bonner's. I lived at the corner of 22nd & Sansom for three and a half years from 2004-2007 - still go back to Bonner's on occasion.

Now that's a dive.

I don't know. For me, Irish Pub is nothing like that. It's not particularly cheap and serves a very particular clientele that don't make me feel very welcome unless I stick to a certain section of my wardrobe.

Maybe it would be easier for you if I had said hipster bar? But for me, there's a whole category of hipster bar to the left of what you would probably think of as a hipster bar.

Silk City?

I know Silk City is a hipster bar, but is it hipster enough for Housh?

I'm sorry, as of now I'm adopting a strict no-responding-to-posters-with-one-bell policy.

I'm sorry, but I've tricked you into breaking that policy. You'll always be a 1-beller.

Endless mentioned it upthread, but Tangier (18th n' Lomby) is a good place, great service and the wings are really good (and I'm pretty ambivalent about wings).
