Jeff:

What is an appropriate amount to spend on a wedding gift these days for a mid-30s lawyer whose fellow mid-30s lawyer friend is getting married?

I'm thinking $200.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

I would just like to say that I have absolutely no memory, for good or ill, of anything anyone gave me at my wedding, and don't recall ever having any awareness of this beyond the time I opened the box or envelope (maybe during my participation in writing thank you notes, but I don't recall this either).

Oh wait, I do remember that my parents gave us too much money and one of my running friends and his wife gave us a copy of Where the Wild Things Are, for reasons I still don't understand, especially since we didn't have kids until 3-4 years after this. But we read it until the covers fell off after we did.

Dear Trent,
Thanks for writing. I'd say 200 dollars is appropriate, unless you're friendly enough to know about some hobby he's passionate about or the party is jhoya's friend in terms of an extravaganza (in which case you may have to raise it up to 250). He has a rough idea about your salary and you have a rough idea about theirs. Let's cover costs and maybe a little something for their troubles.

Regards,
Jeff

It sucks that the YOU PLAY. TO WIN. THE GAME. speech used to be really funny but now it's just a Bud Light commercial.

Is cash ever an inappropriate wedding gift? I don't remember the last "gift" I gave at a wedding. It's just been straight cash for awhile now.

Also of note is the sliding scale of gift expectations. For various reasons, my wedding-going experiences have been split about 50/50 between NYC metro area weddings, and Central PA weddings. The gift expectations are much more modest with the latter, but so too are the accommodations concurrent with each locale.

I guess if it's a sibling or friend you're really close with, you could be a little more thoughtful/creative.

But then again I would have loved to just get cash from everyone.

There's no better present than cash in the amount that you would've spent on a gift anyway.

I giddy with excitement over my new (to-me) home office... Vox moved his into the never-used dining room. I took over his office, took out the doors, blocked the opening with an old baby gate, and painted it Hershey-bar brown.

Picked out a long table-like desk at Ikea today, and set it up with BabyVox's help (he hammered in the little pegs).

It sits off the family room, so now I can "work" without the kids touching my stuff, but I can keep an eye on everything (this was one of the problems the doors caused).

I may never leave.....

and tonight when Vox gets home I'm stealing the bookcases from the kids' bedrooms... (because they match my desk and don't work well in their rooms).

giddy giddy giddy

Did I mention that I i'm finally using my iMac that I never get to use, instead of my six-year-old, hand-me-down from Vox laptop? And that I have hard-wired network connection?
