Michael Jackson: deceased

Postby WilliamC » Thu Jun 25, 2009 18:35:39

Shepard Smith just compared him to James Dean and Elvis Presley. UMMMMM......NO.

He might have been the biggest pop star ever but don't do that.
Do it again!

James Dean would've wished for the kind of success Jacko had.

Eclipses Dean by infinity, on par with Elvis. Serious misunderestimatizing of how important Jackson was to people.

He sold 750 million albums. It's not unfair to compare him to Presley and Dean.

I did say he might have been the biggest popstar ever. Turn on the news now... it shows what he meant to people.

It's just different. Most mourned the Loss of Elvis and Dean.

how the hell do you know he wasn't a freak? and it's really immaterial to the conversation

he probably touched kids, but the man is a pop icon. for many, the former doesn't wash out the latter

Yeah, black people, in particular, never stopped worshiping at his altar. There are a lot of black people to go around

I said as much.

And Elvis was a FREAK. But not the same kind. I liked some of his music. But to me comparing him to Elvis is basic blasphemy.

The ups and downs of his life almost mirror Presley's...hardscrabble childhood, early success into mega stardom, post-peak decline leading into a mild comeback followed by steep fall from popular graces with yet another comeback at the end (never did get to do his Moody Blue album). Elvis would have straight up gone through the same stuff in this media climate, no doubts about it

Imagine if either of them started NOW. How long would they have even lasted in today's public eye? We are seeing starlets cracking in front of us only because we now have access to them. We didn't see the starlets of yesteryear being bombarded with paparazzo in the 50s, but this BS was going on then too.

A lot can and will be said about Jackson... childhood abuse, pressure of being a child star. I luv the old skool Jackson 5 stuff, his solo stuff never did much for me, but I recognize its freshness and impact in the early 80's. I do think like many, he got stuck, he got old and all his self-indulgences and eccentricities over-shadowed any actual contribution in the last 15 years. But his impact on pop culture is undeniable. Like Elvis, they all become distortions and die young... not sure what a 50 year old pop-star could have achieved. The spectre of the child molestation stuff will always be disturbing along with his increasingly effeminate qualities and the horrific mangling of his human form. Having white children with a woman paid off to be a womb doner... freakish stuff, but ABC and I'll be There -- will always bring a smile to my face...

I know Thriller is seminal to many... dated to me, but respect for its time and place.

Well, there are plenty of litmus tests in progress to find that out. Does Lindsay Lohan make it to 30? to 25?
