It's scary. I'm barely 20 minutes back into some proper proofreading, and it's all coming back so quickly. The pedantry. The arsey questions that you, the freelancer can pose because you don't have to ask the author yourself. the need for a ruler, pencil, red+blue biros and last but not least - a clear guide to when is 'on to' not 'onto'?

Anywhere between $22.50 and $28.50. The latter is the recommended rate quoted by Society of Editors and Proofreaders. Shockingly, this is now only marginally less than that suggested for copy-editing. The latter used to cost more.

If I pull down 2 jobs a month, I pay my bills and keep the household ticking over.

Put it in dollars, as I felt that was in keeping with the context of the query. Although the person who answered could have been speaking as someone from the UK, in which case, £ would have been appropriate.

And yes, it's sad that I *think* that was witty.

Ask Wiz,

What's the difference between proofreading and editing. Is the latter a different or a more refined better skill?

The pound sign is on number 3. The dollar on number 4. That's what we get for letting the BBC acorn fail. Hegemony by keyboard.

As for weird stuff the pound sign used to be spelt poond when the chancellor was Scottish. And the boggers down the country back home probably have function keys that insert 'langer' and 'boy' at a single key stroke

Wiz,
I am having this silly turned serious argument with some Anglophiliacs over here with regard to rugby. My contention is if I could pick players that do not make the NFL or get drafted and had someone coach them up for a year, that that team could win a rugby title. My english-loving friends say I am insane. My contention is that rugby is a relatively simple game so natural ability will be able to take over more quickly.
Any thoughts?

Very different. It mainly involves buying uk publishing rights to the next big thing from America and then hyping it as the next big dogs bollix to your sales force.

(really, it's kinda different. Your editor works on a manuscript with the author, to make it better/tighter e.g. Telling jk Rowling not to write so much...stuff. Plot, character, style and tone etc. Your copy-editor edits the manuscipt for sense, consistency and typos. The proofreader checks proofs against a copy edited ms, but is also on the look out for typos and consistency.)

Dear Wiz,

I use too many semicolons. Please help me.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.
