So I'm only an usher, but I have to go to the rehearsal dinner and shell out for an extra night in the hotel? WTF?

I think that's pretty standard. If it's a relative, however, you might be able to mooch off your parents for the hotel room. If it's a friend, I'd see if you could split a room with another usher.

Yeah, but I'm already splitting a room with a friend who is invited but not an usher. It's in RI in June, maybe I'll just sleep on the beach.

And how does this work with a date? Do you get a +1 to the rehearsal dinner as well?

That's all dependent on the wedding. Sometimes only wives and husbands of the wedding party are invited, sometimes it's everyone's family too.

The only way I'd take a date to a wedding is if I had a serious girlfriend. Otherwise, well, you know, weddings are great for pickups. And the guy you're splitting a room with may be willing to come up early. Post rehearsal dinner debauchery is always a fun time.

I thought ushers weren't the wedding party, though. I thought we were a step below groomsmen. I know I'm not supposed to get a tux.

Yeah, everyone does it differently. we didn't have ushers, just let everyone sit themselves. I was an usher and in my bro's wedding.

The dumb woman at work is dropping knowledge about gay people. It seems all her knowledge is based on reruns of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", as that's been her reference point a few times

you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?
