When Random Thoughts hits 8, you're gonna see

On Carlin, while his old stuff was actually quite good, it's unlikely that stand-up in general is going to seem as good 35 years later. When Jerry Seinfeld dies, people will have the same kind of debate. So, if you're 25 years old, it's unlikely that you're going to get Carlin.

Which stand up comic remain relevant for any length of time? Steve Martin? Andy Kaufman? Well, no. Robin Williams? Chris Rock? Not especially. Carrot Top?

Your analogy fails at the outset; Carlin has been lionized and cited as a definitive influence by virtually every major stand-up comic for decades.

Can you find a youtube clip or something that's even good?

I don't think he's ever had a bad joke. But here are a few of my favorites:

Better do that often right now, because in a couple months you won't be able to do that for a lot of years.

It depends -- I let Vox sleep in on weekends, because he stays up later than I do. But then he'll take over and let me nap (I just got up from a two-hour nap).

The best thing is to decide ahead of time who gets to sleep in the night before.

I don't really see how that makes it a bad analogy. Koons is a pretty big deal.

But not the touchstone that Carlin is. That Comedy Central "Top 100 Stand-Ups" list from a couple years back had Carlin at #2 (behind only Pryor). Agree or disagree, but it certainly shows the esteem he was held in by his peers. It's not like he's just NOW being lionized because he's dead.

If Pryor = Picasso, then Carlin = DeKoonig or something. Koons is Bobcat Goldthwait.

I guess TV is on to something. Stand-up just isn't that great.

favorite scene in Pollack.....Time magazine photographer has Thanksgiving dinner with Pollack and friends....Pollack is drunk...at the table he mumbles to the photographer, "I'm not the phony, you're the phony - I'm not the phony, you're the phony - I'm not the phony- you're the phony....he gets progressively louder until he finally explodes and flips over the table full of food ruining dinner for everyone.

Percentage-wise, it's awful, but there are still a few good ones out there. Louis C.K., Bill Maher, Jim Norton, Doug Stanhope, Louis Katz are some good stand-up comedians. Maher hasn't had an HBO stand-up special in a couple years, though.

That's not what I said. But stand up comedy is most often a reflection of its times.

But how precisely do boneless ears confer an evolutionary advantage? Since no mammals have boned ears, you must be correct.

All the animals with bony ears died off three million years ago. They couldn't hear anything coming. The last one got run over by a train I think.

It's been a rough 3 days and there weren't really many drugs or alcohol involved. Honestly I wouldn't know where to even start so we'll leave it that.

Last night was the only recent Phils game that I even vaguely remember and I'd rather come up one run short than one wipe short.

Now I get why Steagles shaves his ass. I'm not sure how I missed his sexual orientation until today.
